so my server is now maxed out (ive been running the h264 branch for a while now). but I need to add another camera.
      • what would be a better option, get a more powerful intel processor (but less powerful gpu) and switch back to the main branch? or get an AMD apu and keep the h264?
      • I havn't found any benchmarks comparing the hardware acceleration between intel integrated and amd graphics

so, what's the approach toward viewing cameras over the internet ... use a vpn? - or another alternative ? - thanks
      • barjac joined the channel
      • jzaw
Nokaji, yes either vpn or ssh -L or ssh -D but do use encryption
      • or https if you really must
      • though you should then put fail2ban on to stop dict attacks on your zm login
      • i prefer not to expose zm to the tubes ... vpn / ssh ftw
      • Nokaji
Ah, okay, ... I'll do me some research into using those two, then - thanks jzaw
      • vpn seems straightforward enough, just choosing a supplier, unless I create my own, somehow
      • jzaw
Nokaji, ssh is super easy ... lock it down to pubkey auth only ... and either use iptables rate limiting or fail2ban
      • Nokaji
        good, I like easy :)
      • jzaw
then you can ssh from anywhere even with your 'roid phone and use -L forwarding or -D socks proxy
      • make sure you know how to secure ssh
      • roaming vpn is somewhat harder to arrange ... but does work too
      • Nokaji
I will, thanks for the tips, I'm still in early stages of designing/building my system but this will ensure I don't make a crucial mistake in the spec
      • as a potential extreme I may have a camera system, a burglar system and a home automation system - I'm hoping ONVIF will go in that direction
      • jzaw
with your cams (and indeed ANY AND ALL home automation) avoid cloud / p2p / upnp functions ... the recent attacks on dyndns and dns that almost killed facebook were all those unsecure IoT devices out there formed into a bot net
      • unsecured * and insecure
      • Nokaji
I'd rather be archiving my own footage if poss, I'm not a big cloud fan as far as privacy goes. Was toying with buying my own web space as a cheaper alternative to cloud but we'll see as things progress - secure home storage may be enough

      • not sure how i'd 'alarm' that one, either, maybe the weight difference or frantic nature
      • bottom of my list of priorities though
      • I'll be looking at some point to find what insurance companies specify as systems which 'reduce risk/premium', as a guide on the build
      • so far I've only found locks

maybe i could pay an installer to put an adhesive doorbell on the front, then I could tick 'yes'
      • jzaw

wasutton3: current ffmpeg is not using any hardware acceleration. So what you need is more CPU.

      • I am wokring on packaging ffmpeg with hwaccel though. I'm hoping it makes a big difference.

ic0n_, could it not be added via the FFMPEG_INPUT_OPTIONS tag?
