If so:- Is there anything special I have to do to get it working? Currently it works (I.E. I can access the web-ui), but, it won't actually access the webcam. Either 'zmc -m 2' crashes, or a bus crash, or it just logs 'socket_sendto( /var/run/zm/zms-501354s.sock ) failed: no such file or directory'
Both remote (IP mjpeg) and local (/dev/video0) fail.

hello all
good to know that the zm community is available to help people!
So I have a question, I recently re-installed zm on a newly freshed Mint17 reinstallation. It gave me a pretty rough time
anyhow i managed to make it work on Foscam cameras using jpeg. Now I have a newer camera with h.264, and would like to know how to configure it wit libvlc given that ffmpeg is nowhere to be seen on the new release of mint

Hi Lihis, yea. I did more research and found dahua isn't something I am going towards, something in regards to a hard-coded (read-only partition) with the a user/pass backdoor. Fun! So I'm more into researching Hikvision but any camera suggestions would be ideal.
I get router protection is the base, I also understand keeping it offline (local traffic only, possible separate router) makes a lot of sense. I just want to have understanding of the vulnerabilities before investing.

stevesmename, I've done a bit of research on this, some time ago
most of what I knew then has been published - like the foscam/clone defaults which are still a massive problem. Trendnet exploits. Even some dlink and linksys stuff
What was good, an generalising: Axis, Panasonic, Vivatar - but only if the user/pass was set decently.
best answer is still to keep them intranet only. Turn off ddns on both router and camera (a huge hole). google for specific brands and see what is known about them
broadly speaking, security on ip cameras is appalling, especially at the lower scale.
even without the default pass for foscams and most of the cheaper end that are based on foscams, up until this year's firmware you could request a url and get the linux core downloaded, which included user/pass combinations in cleartext.
and there's dodgy firmwares to upload for those cams which allow you to use the camera as you wish - even as a basic linux computer, proxy, dos injector, packet sniffer etc

I never understand the whole "camera security" thing, why does it matter? Your cameras _only_ have permission to talk to the device that's recording them, not internet access. If someone has already gained access to the hardware that's recording the data, they already have access to any sort of spoofing/recording attacks they want.

hi people, I'm fairly new to zoneminder. I just got my usb-webcam working, but my next challange is to get my rasbarry pi configured as an ip-webcam and a central zoneminder pc that will do the recording/motion triggered recording etc. can anyone point me to the right direction?
Lihis
tarek_: I think in Rasbian you can just follow debian installation guide when installing from repository.
tarek_
Lihis: I have rasbian isntalled on my ripy, but i would like to have a central debian / ubuntu server where zoneminder will run on
Lihis
tarek_: Oh I see
