After much reading - apache (cgi not enabled by default etc.) and mysql, I managed to get zoneminder on my browser and a stream to view (enable cgi), but I did not configure a virtual host and don't know why I would, since zm is my only use for apache on that machine...

is a virtual host *really* important to zm functioning that I have yet to understand, or is it safe to forgo creating a virtual host in httpd.conf?
