Hi, I wonder if there is any work on making Dishonored 2 working with Wine? I read that staging was working on patches some months ago. Is there stll WIP on this topic?
t-ask: no valid bug reports expecting progress is close to wishful thinking.

if i cherry pick some patches from 2.21-staging, will they work on an older version of wine?

oiaohm: as ther eis no open bug report for Dishonored 2 I thought I better ask before opening another bug report.
oiaohm: NOt sure why the bug https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40631 was marked invalid, as it is related to several games. If I would open one only related to Dihonored 2 I guess, it will not help at all

I understadn that teh Denuvo related stuff is not easy to fix, probably. I just don't know which bug report is the one to use with Dishonored 2 then. Maybe https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44438

I may better ask in #wine cause staging is stalled. Anyway thanks for the info. I hope staging lives on somehow. You all did a very good job over the years. I'm very thankful for all the work done.

t-ask: that first bug 40631 report had no logs or anything else to attempt locate what the copy protection is doing.
t-ask: please note that doom one the game puts out this >>message Warning -> File needs higher OS (Current OS : 05.01, Requires OS: 06.00)<< what means it thinks it XP.
t-ask: so its crash may not be protection maybe bad OS detect.
t-ask
Afaik, Bethesda removed Denuvo copy protection with Doom 2016
oiaohm
t-ask: without the logs you really don't know what you are looking at. The first bug report was making a presume that its the protection causing current failure that may not be the case.

There is a Dishonored 2 Demo on Steam. Maybe that could help a bit. Not sure, as I got the DVD for just 10€ these days. I was thinking of asking https://www.denuvo.com/ for Wine compatibility.
On the other hand they have job offers asking for ASM devs, which sounds nasty for a Wine solution
oiaohm
t-ask: really the worst is simple. Checksum the real dll file in memory and if they don't match your list ban the person. that you find some of the anti-cheat systems doing. Effectively banning or wine users.
or/all
t-ask: also Denuvo is a moving target. So as soon as it get cracked they release update and to connect to game servers you have to update.
t-ask
yes, therfore, the only fix is, making Wine even more Windows compatible... not a nice outlook, as more and more games ger Denuvoprotected :(
oiaohm
t-ask: legally you cannot take Microsoft exact dll files or produce direct duplicates.
t-ask: also it does not help that some of these anti cheat now are running vm detection so using a vm with real windows does not work either.
t-ask
working together wich people who developed "workarounds" is possibly another way to get an idea, what they are doing... while in the end, the just get the exe received by game studios, and then hack their stuff into their code... which is really nasty stuff if done with ASM
oiaohm
wine project is hosted in the USA and is supported by USA company is restricted by DCMA allowable actions.
t-ask: you might not like this but. In some ways some of these really nasty protections the only option will be not buy those products that is legal. If there is enough market of those who refuse other parties may get interested.
t-ask
Yes, that is why I hope for 100% success of Denuvo protection for all new games. Only then social pressure may help
oiaohm
Really I don't play any games that have copy protection./anti-cheat.
Its not like Denuvo helps game performance either.
those who have been hacking and remove denuvo have been finding improved performance without it.
t-ask: do read that Copy Protection page on the wine wiki it does lay out wine project legal limits on what cannot be done.
t-ask
I can imagine, while their CEO os telleing different. It might be just be a good idea, asking Denovu if they ever see a chance getting their protection Linux compatible or not. Just to know how to move on or not
I don't buy any Ubisoft games eg. With DH" I just hope they may remove copy protection as Bethesda did with Doom.
