        basic6_, efi is default today. When you install, and efi is discovered (which all "newer" hardware will have) efi is installed. gpt is a lot more flexible than MBR partitions. So GPT is the default too on new installs. grub will work with both

      • I ran into an issue where my Ubuntu 16 instance was getting these "read only file system" errors when I tried to SSH in or really anything. I managed to get the volume mounted on another instance but am not sure what to look at to see what could have happened. It seems like the OS went into read only mode to prevent failures.
