you'd have to email support, because if they don't enter their bank account information their managed account could be deactivated and Stripe would refund the charge
      • you could collect their debit card info
      • yiggydyang
We have their debit card info... but it's not supported in the API right?
      • debit card payouts
      • markin
managed accounts support debit card payouts
      • yiggydyang
we came over from Balanced payments
      • since when?
      • rafaelba_ has quit
      • is this documented and how do i send a transfer to a debit card for a managed account? Can I do this from the UI?
      • markin
        june 15th
      • yiggydyang
        Is this documented anywhere?
      • markin
managed accounts now have external accounts instead of bank accounts
      • the api docs show the new external_account property
      • yiggydyang
Okay - so bank_accounts is deprecated?
      • markin
        yep
      • nilsmunch has quit
      • yiggydyang
so when i do the transfer i just need to reference any debit card and it will work?
      • debit card belonging to the managed account
      • markin
you have to add the debit card to the managed account. Then the transfer process would depend on whether or not you have manual transfers enabled for the managed account
      • yiggydyang
Unfortunately the debit cards imported from Balanced were not (i don't think) added to the managed account.
      • Instead they were added to Customer records mapped to those managed accounts
      • nilsmunch joined the channel
      • markin
so you could make them enter their debit card info again so you can make a new token
      • or its possible that balance can re-transfer it

question about managed account verification "Similarly, we’ll ask for more information after the platform sends a couple of thousand dollars worth of bank transfers." from https://support.stripe.com/questions/What-is-th...
      • dqsf has quit
      • So, if the account is only doing bank transfers you don't need to verify until you hit a few thousand dollars?
      • Or do you still need DOB and name to do a bank transfer?
      • praboud
well, you can't *only* do bank transfers - where would that money be coming from, if not from charges?
      • markin
so that page has 2 sets of information per country.
      • The first set is needed for all accounts, the second is only needed after they hit that few thousand dollar mark but can be provided before then
      • saint_cypher
praboud: this is for a managed account
      • so from primary account -> managed account -> bank
      • slawley joined the channel
      • markin
saint_cypher: but charges are still made with relation to a managed account
      • saint_cypher
markin: but, only talks about charges until the last paragraph
      • markin
saint_cypher: you can't just transfer them money arbitrarily
      • praboud
saint_cypher: unless you're sending *all* of the money as special case transfers, you still need to make charges
      • saint_cypher
        praboud: exactly
      • markin: why not?
      • praboud
        compliance issues
      • gladely joined the channel
      • you should never be sending more than 10% of your volume as a special case transfer
      • markin
Basically Stripe isn't a money transmitter so it can't transfer money between peers, it can only transfer money between credit card customers and merchants
      • praboud
because this almost certainly means your business isn't compliant, unless you've gotten express permission to do so from stripe
      • saint_cypher
so, if I only want to pay out to my sub-contractors once per month, like I did on Balanced I would....
      • jgoldberg joined the channel
      • markin
you can control the payouts but each payment has to be tied to a credit card charge
      • praboud
you can control the time at which the money is transfered to their *bank account*, but the money needs to go to their stripe account immediately
      • markin
and there is a 1 to 1 mapping of charge to payout
      • praboud
you'd do this either by specifying the destination parameter on the charge, or by making the charge directly on the connected account
      • once the money is in the connected account, you can manually make transfers from the connected account to its bank account
      • saint_cypher
so, If I have a bunch of students signing up for a course and I want to payout the teacher they need to receive a transfer for each signup?
      • praboud
their stripe account would receive a transfer for each one, but it might only be one payment to their bank account
      • the platform -> connected account transfer is purely within stripe
      • saint_cypher
and if you have multiple teacher
      • /teacher/teachers/
      • praboud
then you're going to have problems
      • saint_cypher
there is not a 1:1 mapping
      • praboud
doing stuff along these lines is sometimes permitted
      • but you'd need to send a detailed description of what your business model is to support@stripe.com so somebody can determine whether it can be supported or not

so my question is about adding a user to a subscription on a connected account
      • i have gotten it working to where i create a customer on the connected account and can sign that customer up for a subscription
      • markin
        sure
      • chalettu
but i am testing a case out where i try to add that same customer to another subscription on the same connected acount
      • and i am noticing that it seems to be creating another customer on the connected account
      • markin
you wouldn't add that customer to another subscription, you'd create a new subscription for that customer
      • chalettu
that is the function i ran
      • markin
there is no way that function can create a new customer
      • praboud
when you create a customer, you can have it immediately start a subscription as well, by passing subscription=whatever. you're probably doing that
      • chalettu
        let double check my code
      • markin
        praboud: don't you pass plan?
