I have a sphinx question

in <root>/docs/source/index.rst I'm trying to reference a file <root>/foo.rst

but I keep getting "toctree contains reference to nonexisting document"

what's the right way to spell it to reference things?

(this is driven by the desire to not have two files with the same info, one in /doc/source/ and one in /)
