the frsky varios are cheap and very light, no excuse not to use them.

Nebukadneza, I'm trying to decide if the DS09 or DS11 would be more suitable for the Avia ordered
also feel free to call me names for ordering the Avia :P
but I had a coupon and it should be really nice for calm days.

Photorob
Heya Superbia
How goes it?
superbia
slow man
brothers hubsan seems dead
so cant fly that... and i have nothing else to fly :9
Photorob
better find something, you're gonna start going into withdrawls
Nebukadneza
vlcn: the high precision one?
vlcn
yeah
Nebukadneza
cool :-)
vlcn
I have in the Kunai and one I'm planning to put in the dlg
Nebukadneza
also build an openxvario and compare :-) i like them better, and a ~biiit~ cheaper
but frsky high precision is good
also
vlcn: NAMES
vlcn
hmm?
Nebukadneza
hard decision on the servos though
do DS11 fit?
also, from the video, did you understand how to go forth with your fuse?
vlcn
pretty much, though I'm probably just going to cut up some cf tow and mix it in with 30 minute epoxy
it's not cracked the whole way through
just the gel coat
just want to reinforce it a bit
Nebukadneza
uh
NO
vlcn
this is a $100 model we are talking about, remember :P
Nebukadneza
that’s b*s and might just make things worse
yep, perfect learning platform for how to do it right
i also bough a totally trashed challenger to learn how to repair fuse
vlcn
The recommended servos for the Avia are the Hitec HS-5065MG
Nebukadneza
ok, so glass breaks „visibly white“
vlcn
iirc the DS11 are pretty much the same size
Nebukadneza
what you’d do is, at the crack, start sanding up the gelcoat/paint until you see the glass, and try to find the white-looking crack, which can hide under gelcoat/paint
then you expand your area to whereever white still shows, sanding off gelcoat
then, you sand down the crack, so you have sloped surfaces toward the crack from both sides, down to 0 at the crack (a small gap is better than left cracked fibers)
then you examine the layup, put clear foil over the area, mark inside and outside of the „slope“ area again, with a bit of overlap
cut the exact same layup of fabric, wet out, slightly wet the fuse part (use masking tape…)
the fabric you cut too large, wet on clear film, then put the clear film with the shape marking above, push out air with old credit card, pull off one side of the film, and push it onto the fuse
then some glossy film or peel ply on it, and using kitchen plastic wrap, wrap as tightly as you can
next day, closely masking tape, and sand until flat again
well, is recommended == fits? not every model recommends servos that do actually fit the thickness size-wise
btw, whether 09 or 11, use the SCD variant
also, do not ever put CF on a glass fuse
and especially not spread tow!
it’s way waaay more stiff and brittle
i.e. when the glass still flexes, the CF breaks at some point spontanously, creating sharp edges that cut your glass, then your glass breaks from the „hit” of the instant stiffness loss and beeing cut
so veeery bad idea
even on a 100€ glider you can just do it right :-)
because some day a good one’s gonna break
and at least i need to train those crafts things a lot … i guess everyone does?
so, train it now where it doesn’t matter that much
vlcn
why the SCD variant Nebukadneza?
Nebukadneza
they have considerably less play
which is more important than robustness against hits like the metal variant offers
with a hit to the control surfaces that hard, things break anyway
vlcn
I could see that being important on a DLG, but even on something like the Avia? I'd expect the wing to contribute more 'slop' than a metal gear servo.
Nebukadneza
but the slops add up
if the control surfaces are hinged and „closed“ well, your rod and horns are made well, then i don’t see where much play should come from
ailerons at least are full balsa, right?
vlcn
ailerons and flaps are I think
Nebukadneza
do you already know how to do proper „crossed“ (not sure of the english term?) linkages with straight geometry and little slop?
superbia
wow that was a fun flight
15 min with hubsan

Hello! (^_^)/

Nebukadneza, I think I'll do the DS11-SCB for everything but flaps.
