raydeo i'm obviously not understanding something basic with jinja2, and I can't figure out how to debug it or fix it. base layout has this at the very end:

{% include 'flash.jinja2' %}

flash.jinja2 is in the same directory as layout.jinja (the base layout)

in the child template: {% extends "../layout.jinja2" %}

{{ render_flash('success', 'success') }}

but all i get back is jinja2.exceptions.UndefinedError: 'render_flash' is undefined

the only way it works for me is to copy-paste the macro into the child templates everywhere, and that's insane

raydeo i think i got it sorted. basically base layout includes the macro, and in my view layout i needed to have an import in order to call render_flash. I was missing the import statement; somehow I had deleted it and never noticed.

well, i'd like to know how you pulled it off, cuz I tried about a half-dozen combinations until this worked

my paste was a single file, you broke it apart

the jinja2 docs don't really discuss it much

it had the render next to the macro

then I just include that file where I want the flash mesages to show up

the include you put in layout.jinja2 has no effect

no wonder it wasn't working
