nedbat: For many years, it was my only option. I abhor it.

For classes, we really only need a room for that event. Registering nicks, explaining commands, all that jazz... way more overhead than what we need.

kcunning: ah, well, most channels don't require registering nicks. That's a lot of work. I always give webchat as and option but I don't use it enough to know if I hate it. :)

For the classes, being in the chatroom is not optional.

It's the only way people can get help.

So, we don't go the IRC route because it's simply not what we need. We just need a temporary place to chat.
