Heh. Put in my notice on Friday, and am now dealing with my first perterbed coworker.

Everyone else has been great. This guy is just upset that so many of us are leaving. "No, ride the wave! Stick around! Be a lifer!"

I'm all, dude, they are going to lay you OFF in eighteen months.

"a lifer?" what does that mean? sorry, english is not my first language!

It means that you work at a company for most of your adult life.

So, you get the job in your twenties, then work there until retirement.

It's pretty rare these days, in the US, and almost unheard of in tech.

"lifer" also has connotations of prison :)

I'm not sure why he would want to be a lifer at that company, but I guess it's as close as he can get to his passion.

another aspect of "lifer": there is a suspicion, or fear, or belief, or something, that lifers tend to be the kind of people that can't or won't get another job, and that the good energetic people tend to leave.

Though this guy had the opposite spin: A lifer is someone who can weather any storm! Unlike, you know, us QUITTERS.

It's also something that is a bit antiquated

Also associated with companies being honest. My father always beat that into me that companies used to be loyal to their employees who stuck around long enough

The idea being that if you do well by the company it would do well for you and you could have a career there

Yup. But that's been a joke for years.

Heck, I had two GRANDFATHERS get bit by that line.

I'm no spring chicken, so this was a while back.

My father was a history teacher for ~40 years

You can imagine the slight bias he has towards the greatness of yesteryear
