kennethreitz: electronic wind instrument, it was an oboe and then a flute
      • also, motorcycles, and fractals
      • kennethreitz
        can't wait to watch it
      • i just wrote a song w/ some pycon references in it (rhodes piano (brandon), oboe (k lars)
      • nedbat
kennethreitz: there's something at the very beginning that you won't be able to appreciate fully, because you can't see the live captioning that was happening.

nedbat: when you have a moment, I'm hoping you can try something for me: http://irclog.iq.harvard.edu/dataverse/2016-06-...
      • actually anyone who has a login at from any place at https://incommon.org/federation/info/all-entiti... could help :)
      • nedbat
pdurbin: remind me if i don't get back to you in a few hours :)
      • pdurbin
        ok :)

      • CarlFK
pdurbin: click.. um.. has a login .. what?
      • pdurbin
nedbat: sorry, can you log in to https://dataverse-test.irss.unc.edu with your MIT Touchstone account?
      • nedbat
pdurbin: I get: Problem with Identity Provider The SAML assertion for "eppn" was null. Please contact support.
      • pdurbin: btw, that dropdown...!
      • pdurbin
        bah!
      • nedbat: you don't like the dropdown?
      • nedbat
pdurbin: 1) it's *really long*, 2) all the "http:" in the H's was alarming and confused me at first.
      • pdurbin
        yeah
      • nedbat
pdurbin: you'd be better off trimming "https://idp." from the start of those strings, and having them alphabetize by their domain.
      • pdurbin: or, have "type my institution" be the default, with "let me choose from a really long list" be the alternate choice.
      • pdurbin
nedbat: I agree. I'm not in control of that server but I'm sure we'll run into similar issues on our server.
      • d0ugal has quit
      • nedbat: if you go back to the login page you should see MIT listed at least. EDS remembers your last three selections.
      • nedbat
pdurbin: cool! I'd put the link below the text, just above the drop-down, but that's very nice!
      • pdurbin
        :)
      • skay
pdurbin: CarlFK tried to rope in our academic friend but didn't give him enough background. I sent the irc log link though
      • pdurbin: dunno if he has time to help. who knows though, maybe you'll have a new friend
      • CarlFK
we will make him help kicking and screaming
      • skay

pdurbin: btw, just by coincidence, I'm now using a long drop-down to select an airline, and I type "JetBlue", and it takes me to the J's, and there's no JetBlue there! Because they "helpfully" put the common airlines at the top, out of the alphabetical order.....

i'm still on "3am bedtime in portland" time

        nedbat: which site?
      • pdurbin: is there anything you wanted someone to do once they got to that page? my friend sees his university there, but we didn't tell him much after that
      • nedbat
skay: the airlines are on some concur expense reporting thing
      • skay
nedbat: oh, I was wondering if it was a commercial site. I used to work at an online travel agency
      • nedbat: nevermind then
      • kennethreitz: you must become pro at sleep
      • kennethreitz: I have coworker jetlag
      • all the time
      • kennethreitz
        skay my greatest weakness :)
      • I was sleeping 10 hours a night for several months, but was feeling terrible
      • switched to 5-6, feeling much better
      • skay
that reminds me of a newspaper comic I read, with a super hero called normal man who gets shot. "bullets, my greatest weakness. how did they know?"
      • kennethreitz
        hahahahaha
      • skay
kennethreitz: that's good. sometimes I fall in to 10 hr sleep times. I think 8hr or so is better
      • I hear adolescents need more sleep, or at least later wake up times, and that normal k12 school schedules really screw that up
      • grain of salt since I don't follow that research.
      • kennethreitz
skay yeah i would stay up most of the night in highschool, then sleep in class
      • skay only way i could get enough creative computer time in :P

kennethreitz: I'd be very sleepy in the first class of the day. I really liked the teacher who taught physics and some other classes. When I started taking a first period class from him, he noticed the difference
      • kennethreitz: I wasn't as awake and didn't interact as much
      • kennethreitz
i slept through almost every class, managed C/Bs. In pysics, i had a buddy and we'd take turn taking notes and sleeping, it was great
      • skay
        aw
      • pdurbin
skay: if you could have your friend try to "institutional login" at https://dataverse-test.irss.unc.edu I would appreciate it.
      • kennethreitz
i only managed a d+ in ap physics though. that was a great sleeping class haha
      • skay
kennethreitz: I think you would have enjoyed my high school chemistry class. There was an option to take it self-paced, and you could use classroom time however you wanted, while the rest of the class was in lecture
      • kennethreitz: you could walk around and do experiments, or read, or whatever. and you could do that after school tool
      • kennethreitz: too. also, you got to walk in to the back to get whatever equip and materials you wanted
      • kennethreitz
        so montisourri chemistry :P
      • skay
kennethreitz: and I broke equipment, but not a lot. but man was that annoying
      • kennethreitz: I guess so, but I never had montisorri classes (aside from that one?)
      • kennethreitz
well it's a type of school for young children, that's structured in a similar way (e.g. not structured)
      • skay
kennethreitz: I really had a blast with some of the classes/teachers in high school. lucky. a lot of friends I have talk about how blah their classes were
      • I wish I payed more attention in biology though. I took a basic one and an AP one, but I don't remember a lot.
      • I remember some brain stuff though! I got to disect a sheep brain in college later
      • neuroethology
      • kennethreitz
i went to about three different highschools in different states, and it's AMAZING the difference in each state/culture
      • fantastic school was in Minnesota, worst was in Maryland, Virginia was lower meh
      • skay
kennethreitz: mine was in SE Texas and the region was economically depressed, but I guess there are sometimes clusters of great teachers
      • kennethreitz
if i would have stayed in minnesota, my life would have been entirely different
      • skay
the English teachers worked together well. they cared a lot, and cared about literacy in art and music too. they managed to tack on a bit about those things at the beginning of a class, right before the class started
      • kennethreitz
i had one excellent teacher in VA, and he taught sociology
      • never slept in his class :)
