Psychodata: Actually, yes, that was what I was typing. :)
Kind of funny that I was typing "foobar" and the window focus changed. :)

Aaaaaanyway….. I'm trying to set up user homes on NFS. I've got a working NFS server, but I don't know what to do next.
Should I hard-code each user's home path or edit something in Open Directory to create an official "This is where homes are found" record of some kind?
I used to do this on pure AFP / MacOS Server setups, so I'm a bit lost.

Anyone know how to setup NFS homes for Mac users? I have a working NFS server that the Macs can connect to, but I don't know how to tell Open Directory to utilize it for homes.

here's a stackexchange that might be helpful on the network drives part. Other than that as best I can figure, you're going to need to specify the login. maybe you can get the NFS authing against the opendirectory and make it "just work" when someone connects with the opendirectory login?
(I'm thinking of this open directory kind of like our Active Directory. I know that I have been able to make folders auto-recognize the logged in user when I bind them to our AD and log in as a user, then all the network shares don't require passwords anymore. what I did was just put links on their desktop to their home folder and workgroups folder, though. Not actual network home folder )
(for a split second I was about to type out a sanitized version of our network workgroup folder URL >.<)

Psychodata: BTW, I am using OpenLDAP to get the NFS server (on FreeBSD) to authenticate against Open Directory. Once I learned how, it works well.

Psychodata
jkikpole: does that give you the "magic" quality of "Ok, you're logged in as MyHomeDom\uberUser1, so you get access to this share" like I was meaning? or does it still ask them for a uname and pwd once they try to connect?

I always seem to have problems with Imagr. I think it's because the new macs we get sent don't always have the same OS I have put on imagr... Is there anyway to avoid this? Like having Imagr format the machine to the OS that I have used on my nbi?
A lot of times I get a spinning globe, and then it goes to the Apple start/welcome screen instead of Imagr
jkikpole
Psychodata: It means that the Macs and the FreeBSD system both look to Open Directory and say, "Hey… I've got this username foobar. What UID is that?"
mikedodge04 joined the channel
Psychodata: So they both get the same answer, they prompt for the same password, etc.
foigus
cabel: Hold down the option key to tell the Mac to start from your Imagr NBI?
oh, wait, you are seeing a spinning globe
As long as the hardware supports booting from the OS version used in your Imagr NBI, you should be ok regardless of what OS is actually on the computer's drive
cabel
foigus, yes, but lets say the mac is shipped with 10.10.5 and my nbi is only 10.10.4
jkikpole
Psychodata: Since Unix (Mac and FreeBSD are both basically Unix) uses the UID to say who someone really is, this means that user foobar on the Mac and user foobar on the FreeBSD server are the same person. So, in a sense, yes. It *can* avoid password prompts. Doesn' tnecessarily, but it can.
foigus
i.e. you could get a Mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro with 10.10 on the drive, but it will boot from a 10.7.5 NBI.
cabel
Not in my case
foigus
cabel: What really matters is what the computer originally shipped with
cabel
Well in this case the computer is a mid 2012 macbook pro 13 inch... It is shipped with 10.10. It does not like my nbis
Psychodata
jkikpole ahh so everyone thinks everyone else is the same user, but not the kerberos magic we get from AD binding
jkikpole
cabel: If the Mac hardware came out after you made your NBI, it probably has some custom drivers. The next version of the OS would include those drivers.
ideopathic joined the channel
foigus
cabel: Then you have something else going on. A 13" MBP will boot anything from 10.7....3? Onwards
13" Mid 2012 MBP
jkikpole
cabel: At least, that is how I've understood Apple's behavior to be for the last 20-ish years.
cabel
It's so hard to tell what is the problem. My nbis work with other machines. Imagr doesn't have very friendly logs
foigus
If you don't get past the spinning globe you're not interacting with Imagr

I'm trying now to format to 10.10.4 and use my 10.10.4 nbi that I just used successfully on a macbook air
foigus
You're dealing with purely OS X
cabel
Why does it work with other machines then?
grahamgilbert
Nothing imagr can do to help with that - that's standard netboot troubleshooting until you see the Imagr window
jkikpole
cabel: Are you sure it's a 2012 machine?

my bad
yes, and ethernet port
jkikpole
Hm… MacOS 10.7.4 and higher are supported then.

You're likely looking at something unhappy network-wise. Switch settings, etc.
jkikpole
And other Macs of the same hardware are working?
cabel: Try varying the physical parts to find the glitch. Different network cables, switch ports, etc. Make sure that Mac can use networking at all. Maybe its port is damaged.

How long should it sit at the spinning globe for?
drthtater
I'm looking at the demonstration-setup guide for Munki, but I'm not pulling the directory listing from localhost. Is that something that I can ignore?
foigus
drthtater: That's a web server setting
Not required for Munki
Helpful for troubleshooting
It's information leakage if you have things in there you don't want people guessing URLs for....
drthtater
Ok. I was just following the guide. Just wanted to make sure. Thanks

What would be the best way to troubleshoot bsdpy in my case? I get a list of my nbi's, and then I get a spinning globe, then it just reboots. Was working fine a week ago

I can also download the nbi with the browser no problem

Did anything change in the last week on your network?
cabel
Nope... I've actually had this problem before. I don't know what fixed it though
I think it had something to do with my NBImageInfo.plist
Although, I haven't changed that
foigus
I'd guess the next place you want to look might be wireshark. That and/or simplifying the network between your client and your server.
cabel
so weird. It just worked last week
I think it has osmething to do with my config. Not my network

does your iPhone feel like it's about to catch fire when using personal hotspot? :D
weird that acting as a simple gateway would put such a load on it
