dgknuth: unless you want to use non-free features such as connecting your esxi host to vcenter you have 60 days evaluation license but a dev lab or testing there are other ways ;)

dgknuth: ESXi free takes a few minutes to setup on a Mac these days. Especially as a test environment.

i basically just need to run it to host a couple of servers specifically for a lab environment for my own use

since I have to often replicate what my customers are doing to try and sort out bugs or problems

so, worst case I suppose Ic ould see if we have a license I can use

They do you just don't get vSphere.

dgknuth: you can not just for personal but also production use. THe license key you can get from VMware allows both use cases even with the *free* license.

Perhaps not an ideal workaround, but if you don't provide a user's full name then I noticed that at the pre-login screen only the user's shortname is displayed. This might not be suitable for everyone, but is there any impact in general if the full name is omitted?

keeleysam: great then this will work for my use case. I first thought that the full name was taken from the user's contacts card, but that doesn't seem to be the case. In yosemite Apple moved the "Full Name" field to the user's advanced options pane.

Maybe I’d go next year if this year proves to be an amazing event that I’m ashamed to have missed.
