@macmule > whats taking so long?
      • macmule
ben____: FW800 from a creaking Mac Mini
      • ben____: it
      • ben____: it'll have double RAM & a fusion drive soon. (Home Mac btw).
      • jyang
why fusion? and not just run off ssd?

Can you run a payload free package the will do chmod?
      • ben____
ahh..gonna say it takes 17 hours for my weekly backup to run ~300GB over net to a backup server offsite.
      • NexusT
It does not seem to be working for me currently.
      • macmule
        jyang: space & cost
      • gneagle
        Errors mystify people
      • NexusT: What does this mean? "Can you run a payload free package the will do chmod?"
      • redjuggler joined the channel
      • macmule
gneagle: well Certs without SAN are bad

NexusT: pastebin your pkginfo file and maybe someone will help
      • gneagle
        tackittj: He's asking about a payload-free pkg
      • NexusT
gneagle: Sorry, I have a payload free package in Munki, that is supposed to run a chmod command to give everyone access to a folder, it does not work.
      • ben____
whats the latest OS X a 2009 macmini can run?
      • foigus
        ben____: Current, IIRC
      • tackittj
      • gneagle
        NexusT: Let's see the script
      • macmule
ben____: Yosemite. Currently mine has 4GB RAM & a 750GB 5400rpm disk. Hoping to give it a nice boost with little cost.
      • NexusT
gneagle: http://pastebin.com/vrgkHDri Its not very complicated thankfully.
      • jyang
@macmule fair enough - I think SSD's and HD's are so cheap now though..
      • $49 for a 1 tb WD Green
      • chilcote joined the channel
      • gneagle
NexusT: And how did you insert that into a payload-free pkg?
      • Allister
        gneagle: tell sheagcraig, not me
      • gneagle
        (sudo unneeded)
      • gmarnin joined the channel
      • macmule
jyang: I'd need a 1TB SSD.. Or a 1TB low profile laptop sized spinning disk.
      • gneagle
Allister: Just pointing out that errors mystify people
      • jyang
        hmmm
      • tbridge
        swy - back in action
      • gneagle
Allister: And PackageSignatureVerifier errors will too

      • macmule
TBH, AutoPKGr has done right.. They should generate a new cert. Anyways, I'll reply later.
      • ben____
huh maybe the one i just resurrected was older than i thought..couldnt get anything newer than Lion even after a ram upgrade..i hope you dont need a new fan..the bearings on the original were shot and the new one was more than i wanted to pay
      • Allister
gneagle: sure, it still falls on the 'worth it' side of the cost/value equation to me
      • macmule
jyang: it was £95 for 250GB SSD :)
      • swy
tbridge: re newsletter- I was surprised that using 2 SSIDs would double bandwidth
      • macmule
ben____: it's been in use for a couple of years. So it's fine.
      • sheagcraig
Allister: Ha. Didn't see that one.
      • jyang
@macmule yeah the higher capacities still a little pricey
      • NexusT
gneagle: its the postflight.sh The original Version did not have the sudo but in attempting to eliminate possible issues i added it in.
      • makab3r_ joined the channel
      • gneagle
        NexusT: Definitely the wrong name
      • ben____
ssd's are about $0.50/GB around here.
      • swy
how is the xfinity SSID not just part of the customer bandwidth- hopefully rate limited?
      • Allister
esp. since those can be disabled by default. Heck, I'll use ygini's preprocessor for that and my default catalog, kill most if not all of my recipe overrides
      • gneagle
NexusT: Is this a flat package or a bundle package?
      • tbridge
swy - in this case he's using one wired link from that Comcast modem, and then using one of the unused radios to connect to the xfinity SSID. I think in many cases, especially if you're not getting the full monty connection speed, they're reserving the rest of the speed for their own link
      • macmule
jyang: once you look at a proper SSD, might as well replace the Mini.
      • tbridge
swy - since the gateway is smart enough to rate limit the link, it doesn't have to be done at hte head end.
      • NexusT
gneagle: a flat package, it is just that script
      • gneagle
NexusT: (hint: your script is not running at all)
      • swy
tbridge: so possibly he's on a 30Mbit plan, but the modem is negotiated at 60.
      • gneagle
It must be named "postinstall" (no extension)
      • tbridge
swy - more likely the modem is negotiated at the max possible speed (150?) and then whatever the guy's not paying for is assigned to the xfinitywifi SSID
      • so it *could* be faster than that.
      • gneagle
NexusT: "postflight" script don't exist with flat pkgs, only "preinstall" and "postinstall"
      • tbridge
        but I'm not sure
      • Sean_M_Harper joined the channel
      • gneagle
NexusT: Make sure it is executeable
      • swy
so that's an incentive to pay for the lowet possible, and use 150-lowest possible via xfinitywifi for your daily use.
      • if you're not into configuring load balancing WAN routers.
      • NexusT
gneagle: Ah I see where i went wrong, Thank you!

      • GaToRAiD
Allister: gotcha, thats the problem i'm having, there is only one writeup on how to do it, but very little info

lo all; is there any point in using instadmg (or its replacement) anymore, or is everyone using deploystudio and the built in tools for osx deployment now ?
      • elliotjordan
mmercer: we use AutoDMG to produce the OS.dmg file that serves as the basis of DeployStudio and Casper imaging workflows
      • makab3r_ has quit
      • foigus
mmercer: There's some of both (all three, actually) here. Some DeployStudio, some imaging, some no-imaging (tweaking the default OS).
      • swy
AutoDMG if I need a base OS, but if the machine is new, straight to DS to start configuring.
      • elliotjordan
        ^^
      • swy
I don't mess with the OS as Apple shipped it unless I'm repurposing existing hardware to a new hire. Then it's fresh.
      • mmercer
        * nods * Been a while since I've done the it deployment side of OSX, so wasnt sure how much things have changed; used to run InstaDMG, Munki, and DeployStudio
      • autodmg is the one that replaced insta isnt it ?
      • swy
        mmercer: yes
      • mmercer
thought so. i still call it insta as its been that long XD
      • swy
different projects, overlapping names and purposes.
      • mmercer
really? I thought Auto was a fork of his earlier project by MajorValp
      • bruienne
        heh
      • mmercer
or was insta gneagles. i know he wrote a couple tools i was using for a while too
      • swy
I could be mistaken, but I didn't think AutoDMG is a code evolution of instaDMG
      • mmercer
either way, just refreshing myself on the modern toolset people are using now :)

        ahh, cool :)
      • rustymyers
mmercer instaDMG was Karl Kuehn, picked up by Allister later, IIRC.
      • swy
        ^-- I trust this info.
      • mmercer
rustymyers: ahh, thats what it was, Allister was the one that I remembered, but couldnt think of his handle
      • Allister
I'm just a sucker for attention, kept it on life support for a bit
      • swy
Allister forgotten. Doesn't happen often. :)
      • mmercer
swy: its been... 3? maybe 4 years since I was active in here :p

      • macmule
mmercer: not enough AppleScript to me mine.
      • Allister
remember ManifestDestiny? now THAT was a project name
      • forget Moscargo
      • mmercer
macmule: * nods * I was just observing the trend of "mac" in the name and looking for presence of "mac" in the room
