sorry it's not the collecting that is the issue, if I really want I can just do that through ARD. It is the fact that the data either has to be effectively collected and stored (from however the heck apple stores that data) from the database on the local machine before it is destroyed on restart, or the data has to remain in tact over restarts. I was trying to keep the data in tact, but that isn't possible as far as I can see with my version of
deepfreeze
adamcodega
That's stupid.
Well actually, we only ever had thaw drives, partitions, not individual folders.
I don't know enough about application usage collection, it comes in my JAMF Software Casper Suite.

iterating over nested dicts and lists in python is quite Inception-like I have to say
flip047
ahh well, tbridge is probably right, do they really need it? probably not I guess

after a few levels the code just read o_O

bruienne ELK yep
django?
bruienne
mosen: different python web templating engine
but yeah
similar
just tinkering with Jinja2
mosen
i thought about using elasticsearch with pretty much everything
bruienne
which Salt and Ansible use as well
mosen
yeah I've only used jinja through salt
bruienne
yeah ES can be used for all tons of stuff
mosen: ah right you use Salt
mosen
yep
bruienne
have to get used to the slightly reduced feature set vs. full python
can't just get the type of a n object
mapping, iterable etc
mosen
I'm the lone salt osx guy
bruienne
I am planning on doing more with it
just need the time =\
mosen
jinja seems pretty good but usage in salt is limited
bruienne
yeah variable replacement etc
Flask uses it heavily for html templating
mosen
i didnt realise you dont get full python language
but in salt its pretty much if conditions and dict.get
bruienne
yeah you get all that
but I was trying to use isinstance() and that bombed
you can write your own filters if you need to, but I got it done using built in tests

I feel like such a n00b asking this but, can anyone recommend a good company to register a domain name with? I've never actually had to do this before.
flip047
Where are ypu again Dials?
you
DialsMavis
sorry, I'm in australia flip047
but I'd like to register a .com & .com.au domain
flip047
ahh ok, I was going to say if just .com I have found dyn to be fantastic
DialsMavis
hrmm
thanks anyway
flip047
I have also just registered a few domains with GoDaddy. Their interface is super easy to use, but I am having a little trouble transferring an au domain to them, probably nothing on their end though
(I'm Aus too
DialsMavis
oh ok cool. that's right, you and morgsdaly are in QLD yeah?
flip047
yah
DialsMavis
yeah I've been recommended godaddy
they seem to be one of the cheapest so far
flip047
I read some reviews about GoDaddy which made me a little uneasy, primarily things about what it's owners values are and how that might be reflected in the company, but I have gone with them anyway. I can't give a proper recommendation because only just started using them but so far the interfaces are super slick and it alls seems to work very well.
GoDaddy is also the default "auto-setup" provider for a new server 2012 essentials setup so they must be half decent.
DialsMavis
nice... when you talk of interfaces, you're talking about the web hosting interfaces?
flip047
Ahh, sorry should probably specify, I don't have any site hosting done with them, but I use them for domain management and dns management. When you register a domain with them, it comes with dns service included. I found for example, with the small company I was with, I couldn't add SRV records which I needed for office 365, and with dyn there was something else I didn't have control over, but GoDaddy has it all in a really nice little interface and
you can manage multiple domains and their DNS settings from the one area.
msim
>.> Don't get your ssl cert from GoDaddy
flip047
That's good to know! msim, why is that?
DialsMavis - let me be clear though, I do get an uneasy feeling from GoDaddy, it seems to have a divided reputation.
msim
Eh, heard some shaky things, and it's not really globally recognised.
flip047
hmm
DialsMavis
oic
flip047
I've had the feeling I should cut my losses and move away from them just to be sure...

Their interface IS really good though
DialsMavis
wow, ok. I should really consider my options very carefully by the sounds of it.
msim
Do a lot of reading
DialsMavis
yeah, I'm going to do some reading tonight

macmacintosh: from disk utility you can click on a volume, and if the mountpoint at the bottom is /, thats the booted system
