        so an apple repair shop just sent a mail saying that hardware faults (and specifically problems charging) are caused by reinstalling it by other means than holding cmd+r while booting.
      • "it" meaning a macbook
      • actually the way the mail was worded, even upgrading to a newer version of OS X than was on the mac when delivered will cause hardware problems
      • and that they will not be honoring service agreements because of this

        yeah. It is possible that what they actually mean is that one should not deploy an older OS than what was initially delivered, but that just isn't what they are saying

      • and in any case, the list of macs originally delivered with 10.10 is a whopping 2, the 5K imac and latest mac mini

        kujeger: macmule's right, the only time that a Mac *has* to do an OS install via the Recovery partition is if it is so new that it shipped with a special build of OSX.
      • And that build is higher than the standard-app-store distro.

        not to mention that all that usually does it prevent it booting. Not...break chargers.

        No doubt you've seen the minor hair-pulling that's gone on in here trying to get rollout images sorted enough to deal with the brandest-newest Macs. But that's always a minor issue, usually rectified by Apple releasing a point update not long afterwards, then everyone's golden again.
      • kujeger: Don't forget, if you think you're being given the run-around by an Apple-certified tech or SP, pick up the phone and call the Apple support line.

        AppleCare Services takes complaints against ACxx's very seriously.
      • If a MagSafe shit its nappy just after you'd done an OS install, no matter what version you used, it can only be coincidence.

        Branes: if it escalates that will probably be done. It's actually two levels removed from us (it's a customer's customer having this trouble, and they forwarded it to us asking if they're being given the run around)

        Ah. They definitely are, sounds like they're just trying to dodge doing any real work and are hoping that the customer is a typically-non-compos-mentis Mac user who'll believe anything they're told.

        yeah. It's just that this repair shop is supposed to be at least somewhat reputable, but it is possible their mac department is just that bad

        Considering how mindbogglingly easy they've made it for someone to become a certified tech, anything's possible these days, sadly.
      • Requirements: Good hair, nice teeth, ability to follow IKEA-like pictogrammic instructions, manages to stab their own appendage with a pentalobe driver no more than once a day, and you can pay the training invoice within seven days. Voici, you too can become an Apple Certified Mac Technician.

      • kujeger: I've been a tech for most of the past thirty three years, and since Apple reduced hardware servicing to the equivalent of Lego Duplo for Geeks, it has stopped being a satisfying job :)
