I suppose you simply got your ES configuration wrong or there's a connectivity issue between the nodes you might have.
But how is that connected to "running as a service"?

It wasn't doing that before I changed- elasticsearch was working as per normal
and the elasticsearch logs don't appear to have connectivity issdues
