hcwool: crap, not sure why I didn't see this earlier
      • I just was fooling around p5.js http://jsbin.com/nagiqe/1/edit?html,js
      • I'm going to take a nap now
      • hcwool: what curious what the p5 stuff you worked on? I think I'm going to start making the playground or wtv it's called
      • hcwool
I drafted a few buffet items: movement, sprites, collision/overlap, points
      • etc
      • jonl
ooo coool! Would love to see those
      • I'm going to head home now, will check it out when I get home and probs take a nap
      • nahtnam joined the channel
      • Hcwool, want to send me what you have so we don't repeat work?
      • ddollar joined the channel
      • hcwool
jonl: ugh, it really isn't ready
      • Pretty much in note form
      • jonl
        hcwool: ah gotcha
      • hcwool
jonl: Do you want to jump on a partytime and coordinate it?
      • jonl
Hcwool, actually i think I'd also like to have something more fully formed before we think about dividing work!
      • hcwool
        thats cool jonl
      • jonl
Will ping you later with what i have but it might not be until tmrw
      • hcwool
        thats cool
      • :)
      • ZucchiniZe
ddollar: what brings you to #hackedu?
      • zrl
ddollar: hey! great to see you over here :-)
      • ZucchiniZe: ddollar works on https://convox.com/ and him and i talked on the phone earlier today
      • ZucchiniZe
        ah
      • cool
      • zrl
        man
      • i really do not like devise
      • i'm working on converting from devise to omniauth
      • devise eats the omniauth.
      • ZucchiniZe
        for breakfast
      • zrl
        it kills omniauth's routes.
      • ZucchiniZe
        I never truly learned devise
      • should I?
      • zrl
it's not too complicated, just a rails plugin
      • i'd check it out, it's very popular
      • i _do not_ like it
      • ZucchiniZe
it doesn’t look like there are any alternatives
      • other than omniauth
      • zrl
        there are quiet a few
      • or you can implement authentication yourself
      • ZucchiniZe
        hahaha, no
      • hcwool
        ssun are you up
      • ssun
        it's 9
      • so yes
      • hcwool
        oh alright
      • ssun
        what's up?
      • ZucchiniZe
      • hcwool
        i usually do :(
      • ZucchiniZe
        ah
      • you guys up to start the workshop right now?
      • ssun
        wat
      • its a thursday
      • ZucchiniZe
        and?
      • ssun
        homework
      • ???????
      • ZucchiniZe
        thats for friday
      • mHesby
do summit core teachers give homework?
      • ZucchiniZe
        yea
      • but I usually do the stuff they give on their second day on friday
      • mHesby
but it's not like they can say, "this is due this day, and i will grade it that day or it is a 0"
      • right?
      • ZucchiniZe
        they can
      • but usually don’t
      • mHesby
really? o.O grades are based on CAs and Cog Skills. no comprendo.
      • ZucchiniZe
        projects
      • mHesby
yeah. but projects can be turned in whenever. right?
      • zrl
Arxenix: hey, sorry i didn't see your message earlier, was on a walk. it's nice to meet you!
      • ZucchiniZe
        not in 10th grade
      • mHesby
zrl: Has anyone tried to sit down and make a list of "skills and knowledge that should be learned" ?
      • learned/practiced
      • zrl
we thought about doing that a while ago after another teacher recommended doing that (cc jonl), but haven't yet
      • ZucchiniZe
you have to turn projects on time or you get all 1s for cog skills
      • Arxenix
zrl: hey, nice to meet you too.
      • mHesby
        Arxenix: \o
      • zrl
after each workshop we encourage leaders to run "project time", where hackers pair up and work on projects together
      • generally for 1 - 2 meetings
      • and the end of the 2nd meeting, everyone demos what they built
      • the idea is that skills introduced in the workshops will be reinforced then
      • mHesby
Nice. So they should be remixing the project? or trying to build something new based on what they learned?
      • zrl
totally up to them, though we encourage them to build something new
      • mHesby
        cool
      • hmmm
      • not a bad idea
      • zrl
(granted, this varies club to club. we try to give as much autonomy as possible to club leaders)
      • mHesby
i showed my MS students today how to take input from a user, use a button, and change the DOM's styling. I wonder what they could come up with.. with just that. hah
      • zrl
https://github.com/hackedu/meta/blob/master/app... is the format we followed for our summer program
      • let me pull up projects from the summer program to show you what people built after the 1st day
      • with just knowing static html and css
      • mHesby
        nice survey feedback.
      • zrl
        thank you!
      • hmm, so everyone built their projects on cloud9 and their workspaces are currently spun down, so i can't link you to the projects themselves
      • but some of the stuff we saw:
      • - visual prototype of a website that generates outfits for you based on the weather
      • - personal websites with images
      • - website with bookmarks and embedded videos
      • one person started on a "personal awesome" site that they worked on for a few days
      • mHesby
        =)
      • zrl
it eventually played a different video every time you refreshed and had an embedded song
      • they also taught themselves css and made it look quite nice
      • mHesby
Yeah. I'm really considering completely tossing the Khan Academy for html/css.
      • takes the kids so freaking long. and they end up just putzing through it.
      • ZucchiniZe
I’ve seen that a lot of kids just try and get the solutions from their friends
      • mHesby
        yeah
      • there's that.
      • zrl
we've heard of that happening with codehs as well.
      • mHesby: have you checked out p5.js?
      • mHesby nods.
      • jonl's currently making a workshop with it
      • mHesby
I haven't yet. I'm super excited about the thing hcwool is making though. the workshop
      • and jonl too. yeah
      • zrl
        ah, i haven't seen hcwool's work yet
      • hcwool: is it in a pull request?
      • mHesby
I think my MS students will be stoked to try it out.
      • hcwool
ugh zrl don't look at that
      • mHesby laughs
      • zrl
        lol
      • mHesby
It's coming along nicely i think!
      • hcwool
        I'm currently rewriting it
      • well, amongst other things
      • zrl
i think html/css is nice because it immediately puts people into a playground
      • mHesby
        Agreed
      • hcwool
        👍
      • zrl
but i'm worried that just static websites aren't very exciting for people
      • hcwool
But the youth of today love interactivity
      • zrl
packaging the html and css up into an "app" seems to be much more engaging
      • mHesby
they are for beginners. I think.
      • zrl
        (thank goodness for cordova)
      • mHesby
        True.
      • ZucchiniZe
        never actually used cordova
      • only ionic
      • zrl
        ionic uses cordova
      • mHesby
you saw. u.smtcs.rocks/styledoc and u.smtcs.rocks/htmldoc right?
      • ZucchiniZe
        I know
      • mHesby
        eugh... link.
      • I gave those two things to MS students last year. And a number of the kids went crazy and just made all types of cool things.
      • zrl
have you tried not giving those docs to them?
      • i wonder how much they could discover straight from google
      • hmmm
      • ZucchiniZe
I wonder how many would have inspiration though
      • mHesby
Totally. I do a short thing on RTFM =) And have them google up stuff.
      • zrl
i wonder if you could give example google queries for trying to find out stuff
      • and how helpful that'd be
      • mHesby
        Very helpful.
      • So many people don't know how to use google well.
      • zrl
        the goal is autonomy right?
      • actually
      • mHesby
        indeed.
      • zrl
        i take that back
      • the goal is excitement and confidence, right?
      • motivation = excitement + confidence in my eyes
