#hackedu

      • jonl
I heard from someone from the medialab that they were making different skins
      • hardmath123
jonl: i remember there being a quick hack to change block colors, i can dig that out if you want.
      • Code_Assassin
lol, wait so this is about the credibility/professionalism of scratch?
      • jonl
Code_Assassin: to a high school student, basically
      • people don't really believe it
      • I have many club members, leaders, and students to complain about it
      • hardmath123
jonl: but, i mean, everyone uses extremely colorful syntax highlighters for their fancy schmancy CoffeeScript in Sublime Text. it's the same thing.

      • thethirdone
I think if students can check there pride at the door, scratch is amazing
      • jonl
thethirdone: yeah then it feels like a teacher telling a student to do something
      • thethirdone
even if it is only used to introduce game programming then transfer to js
      • hardmath123
you don't have to tell them to do anything. say "this is a tool you can use to program games. go for it!"
      • Code_Assassin
jonl: I understand your concern, and in fact I can see why Scratch is viewed in a negative light.
      • jonl
thethirdone: that's a really good idea
      • maybe it's like 2 hours
      • and then done
      • Code_Assassin
        ^
      • jonl
And here's exactly how to do the samething in JS
      • with examples
      • Code_Assassin
Or just use something like phaser right out the gate ;)
      • hardmath123
      • jonl
Code_Assassin: that was the initial plan
      • hardmath123
that post got a lot of attention by Scratch-ey people
      • jonl
Any of you guys Seymour Papert fans?
      • I want to put together a book club
      • hardmath123
who were all like "oh yeah this is why we aren't making Scratch look potential"
      • *professional
      • jonl
        I agree with Scratch
      • but the problem is I don't know how to ensure that students don't backlash (and they have)
      • Happened at soramy's club
      • Maybe it's not a scratch problem
      • Code_Assassin
jonl: part of being a teacher is dealing with students bs yo
      • hardmath123
they use Scratch/Snap! at Berkeley and Harvard, surprisingly.
      • Code_Assassin
lay down ground rules quick, and pretty sure everybody will respect you
      • jonl
Code_Assassin, eh, we have different styles
      • afk, learning phaser lol
      • hardmath123
yeah, i think people will respect Scratch if someone they look up to (i.e. you) respects it
      • Code_Assassin
jonl: I'm not saying be a disciplinarian lol
      • I'm pretty sure you'll be dealing with a mature group of students anyways.
      • JacobEdelman
also, if you do scratch, you get the benefit of hardmath123 and his friends
      • who are big people in the scratch community
      • (aka, helping to advice on panels for it or something)
      • Code_Assassin
        ;-; unity represent 24/7 o.
      • jonl
        JacobEdelman, I <3 that. Go hardmath123
      • hardmath123: Code_Assassin would you guys be down for a Seymour Papert Book club?
      • hardmath123
jonl: eh, i wish, but i'm gonna be gone (afk and everything) for a large chunk of the summer
      • Code_Assassin
        afk looking at youtube link
      • jonl: amazing talk, thanks for sharing. Papert talks about how everyones individual experiences affects their ability/desire to learn. I couldn't agree with this more. There's personal experiences. Cultural experiences. Even the common experiences that society offers to its participants. The true challenge of educators today is in *realizing* this.
      • However, lessening the educational defecit/gap is much more serious than this.
      • You know the saying, "War is the health of the state"?
      • You could say the same for inequality.
