I need help with escaping double quotes that wrap an environment variable

what I tried is:

.\render.ps1 "%VARIABLE%"

this doesn't include the double quotes

then I tried:

.\render.ps1 \"%VARIABLE%\"

but this time the environment variable didn't get resolved

any suggestions?

I need the quotes because the variable includes spaces

oh wait, looks like escaping works.
