that's what i said from the very start, which is why i kept repeating this
      • _hc
I personally haven't asked hosting providers
      • we have had various offers, which we try to take up
      • then we do have some sponsors VMs on eclips.is cloud, but they are Xen so don't work for this
      • tomreyn
i'm thinking dedicated servers rather than VMs, though i guess large VMs with nesting would also work.
      • i know everyone is short of time, but there are a bunch of companies who do hosting and supprot open source projects, and would be willing to offer serives to more projects if they just ask, and are happy to place a logo on their website in return
      • i dont run a hosting business myself, so i'd prefer them to donate it (which will cost them much less) over me donating it, and i'd better spend time and efforts on securing a sponsorship deal for you then,
      • that's if you want to do one, and would be happy with me trying to get it, and the terms are set.
      • _hc
can you recommend some to ask? I can send some emails
      • tomreyn
i'd just ask them all, hetzner, ovh germany, rackspace, gandi.
      • and a lot more
      • you can also apply for server hardware at thomas krenn, and for free hosting services at osuosl.org
      • Coffee[m]
_hc: Maybe I could do a request on TWIF or on Mastodon?
      • _hc
        Coffee: yes please
      • Coffee[m]
You'd have to write up a proposal of what you're looking for though.

      • tomreyn
you will need to contact the companies directly. first by pohone to find out who handles such requests, or whether they dont do it in general, then by email, targetted to the person who handles them.
      • proller has quit
      • right, you need to explain what your project is, what it achieves, what you need from them, and what you are willing to do in return.
      • proller joined the channel
      • Coffee[m]
We can probably find volunteers to do this, if we know what's needed.
      • tomreyn
the more specific the first request is the better your chances.

how to identify potential sponsors: check for company logos on websites of large open source projects, or open source projects doing similar work to yours (i.e lineageos, microg), and talk to these people, too.
      • i'm offering some of my time to identify contacts and - if you like - send sponsorship requests in the name of this project. we can draft these e-mails in advance so it's clear what will be offered and what will be requested.
      • i'm surprised you haven't done this, yet, it's worth it. even with our small and not attractive 'megaglest' project (most companies are not very happy to sponsor gaming projects), we got some offers.
      • and f-droid is a lot more relevant, and known, too.
      • so... let's do both.
      • i'll set up the VM for you and you discuss internally about how you think you should proceed with sponsoring. deal?
      • Coffee[m]
_hc: Surely you could write up a spec of what you'd need?
      • The grunt work can be done by non-coding volunteers.
      • _hc
        tomreyn: deal!
      • tomreyn
        yeay
      • take this for example
      • NOTICE: [admin] eighthave opened #78: request sponsored hosting from various hosting co… - https://gitlab.com/fdroid/admin/issues/78
      • sure, you're not as big as gentoo, but IMO as important. gentoo is one of many linux distros, f-droid is the only (or only relevant) open source software repository for one of the only two relevant mobile computing platforms.
      • Porkepix
_hc: For sure, Gandi would be glad to help I think, just ask them. This is virtualized environment, I don't know with what though. Anyway, virtualization isn't an issue if you can get more than one VM, right?

      • _hc: You could also ask for money to some organizations, and then pay for whatever infrastructure you want

OVH might also be considered I guess.
      • and there, you might get baremetal server if you need to virt yourself the things.
      • Porkepix
        Yup
      • Online/scaleway can be asked too, but I'm unsure about those
      • tomreyn
hc is short of time, the only thing those people with little time should do is set the terms by which others with more time can make sponsorship requests, and define the hosting projects which could be nice to setup with sponsorship.
      • Tengu
        same for Hetzner.
      • Porkepix
_hc: You want everything in the same place or it doesn't matter?
      • Yeah, but I can't answer myself to the above questions :)
      • And I guess those companies would rather talk to people that "represent" the project
      • As for whatever is acceptable as conditions and so on
      • s/whatever/what/
      • _hc
Porkepix: ideally other people would take this project on, I currently have too many things on my plate, and its not good for the bus-factor or my sanity ;-)
      • Porkepix
You're too few people taking care of F-droid? :(
      • _hc
that means me not running servers. Marcus (BubuIIC) uniq or others might have spare cycles to run servers
      • Porkepix
Yeah, but who knows what are the needs? What are acceptable conditions?
      • _hc
but spreading it around even more would be better IMHO
      • marmistrz joined the channel
      • yeah, its a community project, so answering those questions means asking people, the forum would be a good place
      • MarcusBubuIIC[m]
        I can probably run servers.
      • I would like not being responsible for asking for sponsoring though. Or defining what we need, etc. I currently don't have the time/energy for this.
      • _hc
I imagine we could use the terms that Debian uses
      • Porkepix
Different kind of community projects have different kind of ways to handle things. Some have people with the final word, some don't, depends on the organization… :)
      • (As for forums, I tend to avoid those when possible, being spread on many websites to check on in very time-consuming and you tend to forget things. That's the advantage to centralized many things in my IRC client :) )

Awww, you're going to do that through gitlab's issues :(
      • Coffee[m]
We do need a solution for that. Requiring people to accept a third party's TOS to contribute is unethical.
      • Tovok7 joined the channel
      • Porkepix
Well, I don't really have problems with gitlab itself, rather with their dependency over third party OAuth or Google's recaptcha
      • Coffee[m]
        Registering over tor doesn't help?
      • tomreyn
        done, hc
      • _hc
        thanks
      • all such web services have a TOS, gitlab's is quite standard
      • I don't see the ethical issue with gitlab's TOS
      • having Terms of Services doesn't automatically make it bad
      • for example, kicking people off for abusive behavior is something that is good
      • IMHO
      • Porkepix
Coffee[m]: If you want to register without OAuth, then you need to go through the recaptcha. And even if you put aside privacy issues by using Tor, no offense but I've some ethical problems at training american military drones by completing those captachas. I did it fro way too long.
