hi all.. Is it possible to disable a computed property on the fly?

the application I work on has a normal mode and a tracing mode. when the user selects tracing mode, I need to run some computations on the fly and have the UI update as the children models get updated. I was thinking of using a boolean value that the CP would depend on and if tracingModeOn was false (default) then I'd just skip the computations. is there a better way of achieving this?
