soiled joined the channel
tingkatu joined the channel
barq
ah
tingkatu is now known as contingo
soiled has quit
LjL
barq, had it been one euro, it would be mine now :P
barq
The silver is about to be sold
contingo
it sure is
YOUR ITEM WILL SELL
barq
Not my item
Oh, it's you item
contingo:
contingo
you're following my listings?
LjL
like a hawk
contingo
I am so behind with putting up new listings
it's so boring
barq
I'm just following the 1kg
Didn't realize you're in this channel until now
It's hard to merch with eBay with shipping + fees
contingo
merch?
barq
buy and sell for profit
merchant
contingo
oh
I'm not doing this for business, just want to liquidate some of my stack
barq
Even as a hobby you don't want to make losses
contingo
I'm definitely not making losses so far
but if I was looking for high turnover then I would be, but anyway the main thing dictating profit / losses in silver market is the silver market
in the medium / longer term
i.e., price movements are on a much bigger scale than the spread at any given time or than ebay / paypal percentages
barq
Sure, it's nice to trade something that's tracked on an index
Or sell stuff with low shipping compared to its traded value
At the moment I have 20-30% shipping costs + 10% eBay + some PayPal
So need to make a great deal buying
contingo
yes that makes a huge difference
barq
10-20% shipping
contingo
but aren't the shipping costs covered
barq
So can maybe make 10% profit if I'm lucky
When selling, yes
But for buying I need to pay
contingo
are you both buying and selling on ebay?
barq
Mostly, yes
Not like I'm doing a lot of trades
contingo
that sounds like a really hard model to make work
barq
yep
It's only a hobby
Not worth the time taking pics and listing
But probably buying locally and selling on eBay is better
Or other sources
contingo
or buying wholesale / in bulk
esp. in situations for imported goods where you can negotiate a price
that is a standard approach
barq
Yeah, but then you need to go all out, register as professional seller, collect VAT and pay taxes
LjL
or risk jail
which is probably what most of the people doing this do!
contingo
idk what the trade thresholds and operating strategies are before you are required to formalize things, I just remember I had my family's accountant and an HMRC guy look at what I was doing before, and okay it
but what I found was that as a private investor I could buy various things in other EU countries at preferable VAT rates so long as the company I bought from didn't exceed some trade threshold with the UK
LjL
contingo, when you're buying from the EU you aren't "importing" at all though
contingo
whereas the secondhand market on ebay.co.uk supported winning prices according to our own VAT rates
LjL
actually importing for the purpose of reselling is different
contingo
I'm not really talking about importing here, just what VAT rate applies to the purchase
this all pertained to silver coins
I did the photos... followers of my listings are going to have to endure a decline in photo quality
