I made the world's first mobile wireless internet connection using a calculator, ancient-history-ago.
tingkatu
I have quite a lot of silver pandas
badon
Nice!
LjL
literally the world's first?
badon
Very cool collection LjL.
LjL: Yes, literally the first.
LjL
wow
tingkatu
I'm gonna be selling ten to twenty 2009 1 oz. pandas soon
LjL
oh, are you a ham operator?
badon
LjL: Licensed, yes. Using it now, no :)
LjL
badon, i am interested in radio but not knowledgeable nor, honestly, willing to get knowledgeable enough to get licensed. i have been toying with an rtl-sdr dongle though, looked at it again in the past few days
badon
I connected to EFnet IRC with the calculator, and people didn't believe me that I was mobile and wireless, haha.
LjL
:D
badon
LjL: It's mostly a waste of time unless you're really into the experimentation side of it.
If you want to actually communicate, amateur radio is legally crippled to the point of uselessness.
LjL
i know :(
badon
Besides, things like good quality FRS radios are vastly superior in performance, at much cheaper costs.
And you can use them with everyone.
SDR is a really cool development, and the best part is no license is required for just receiving.
LjL
badon, the rtl-sdr is a sweet spot for me because it's very cheap, it only receives which is a limitation but also means that i don't have to fret about doing the wrong thing, and it receives a *lot* of stuff (25MHz to 2100MHz, with a bandwidth of 2MHz), so there's a lot of interesting communication to find out about and to have fun seeing if it's possible to decode in software
badon
A lot can be done in software.
Check out MultiPSK, and then try sending PSK31 over PC speakers across the street :)
LjL
yes, i was about to try receiving GPS, before people on IRC distracted me
badon
It works!
LjL
heheh
well
look at this
badon
MultiPSK is free software. Hellschreiber is another mode that wotrks over PC speakers.
LjL: Haha, yeah, people's first reaction is outrage, but none of them in your link are so risque that they would be universally considered illegal. Those kind DO get sent over SSTV though, usually in countries with lax enforcement, haha.
tingkatu: Yeah, good to have you in #coins. It will be nice if you'd like to stay and help us grow the channel/forum.
it's an open source program, although obviously it runs on a closed source platform
tingkatu
Sure, I added it to autojoin, badon! And now I must sleep
nice to have met ya
badon
tingkatu: OK, talk to you later.
LjL: Looking.
LjL
badon, after all these years Android has supplanted PocketPC devices and other palmtops, there still isn't something like PocketDigi (at least not open source) for it
