      • what sort of ebaying do you do, badon?
      • LjL
i do the sort of ebaying where i never sell anything because i hoard, and i never buy anything because it all costs too much
      • but you know that
      • tingkatu
I dis-hoard and sell in sporadic binges because it's quite boring doing all the listings and packaging and posting
      • but the promise of money eventually gets me going
      • but every time I do it I have to relearn everything
      • badon
        tingkatu: I'm mostly a buyer.
      • tingkatu: I blog about coins I find on ebay.
      • I'm like LjL, I hoard, so I rarely sell.
      • tingkatu
        oh cool, link?
      • LjL
i buy vintage computers. portably ones. generally, the smaller the better.
      • badon
tingkatu: I'll get you a link.
      • tingkatu
I used to sell a lot of coins
      • badon
LjL: I like the Samsung Q1UP. Way outdated now though.
      • tingkatu
in fact I'm just about to sell a lot of coins, but it's all boring modern bullion

      • LjL
badon, that's very recent compared to what i usually buy
      • tingkatu
LjL I'm gonna sell that Hewlett Packard HP-41CX with card reader
      • badon
        "Palmtop", I remember that word.
      • Here's my current active blog line of discussion, you might want to skip to the end: https://forum.coincompendium.com/index.php?topi...
      • LjL
tingkatu, i had half a mind to get an HP 50g because my 48 is dying, but i dunno
      • badon, this is (most of) my collection https://www.flickr.com/photos/ljlbox/albums/721...
      • badon
        LjL: Looking.
      • tingkatu
        cool, badon
      • badon
I made the world's first mobile wireless internet connection using a calculator, ancient-history-ago.
      • tingkatu
I have quite a lot of silver pandas
      • badon
        Nice!
      • LjL
        literally the world's first?
      • badon
        Very cool collection LjL.
      • LjL: Yes, literally the first.
      • LjL
        wow
      • tingkatu
I'm gonna be selling ten to twenty 2009 1 oz. pandas soon
      • LjL
oh, are you a ham operator?
      • badon
LjL: Licensed, yes. Using it now, no :)
      • LjL
badon, i am interested in radio but not knowledgeable nor, honestly, willing to get knowledgeable enough to get licensed. i have been toying with an rtl-sdr dongle though, looked at it again in the past few days
      • badon
I connected to EFnet IRC with the calculator, and people didn't believe me that I was mobile and wireless, haha.
      • LjL
        :D
      • badon
LjL: It's mostly a waste of time unless you're really into the experimentation side of it.
      • If you want to actually communicate, amateur radio is legally crippled to the point of uselessness.
      • LjL
        i know :(
      • badon
Besides, things like good quality FRS radios are vastly superior in performance, at much cheaper costs.
      • And you can use them with everyone.
      • SDR is a really cool development, and the best part is no license is required for just receiving.
      • LjL
badon, the rtl-sdr is a sweet spot for me because it's very cheap, it only receives which is a limitation but also means that i don't have to fret about doing the wrong thing, and it receives a *lot* of stuff (25MHz to 2100MHz, with a bandwidth of 2MHz), so there's a lot of interesting communication to find out about and to have fun seeing if it's possible to decode in software
      • badon
A lot can be done in software.
      • Check out MultiPSK, and then try sending PSK31 over PC speakers across the street :)
      • LjL
yes, i was about to try receiving GPS, before people on IRC distracted me
      • badon
        It works!
      • LjL
        heheh
      • well
      • look at this
      • badon
MultiPSK is free software. Hellschreiber is another mode that wotrks over PC speakers.

      • badon joined the channel
      • did you get that link, badon?
      • LjL
      • badon, i received this with a somewhat obscure wideband scanner i bought off ebay, and a "palmtop" also bought on ebay (my HP Jornada 720, i think)
      • no cable, just one next to the other :P
      • and a €20 somewhat-amplified chinese HF antenna
      • badon
        No, checknig logs...
      • nice photo tingkatu
      • tingkatu: Have you seen #coin?
      • tingkatu: Have you seen #coins?
      • looking, LjL
      • LjL: Cool, you got SSTV :)
      • Probably the most useless mode ever created for radio, haha.
      • No error correction, takes tons of bandwidth, poor quality, slow, etc.
      • Sending digital files is probably the better way to do it, with error correction.
      • But, SSTV is a "historical" mode.
      • Either way, not bad for a palmtop setup.
      • If you get something like MultiPSK, you might be able to find all kinds of cool stuff.
      • Haha, I forgot about the porny photos they like to send on SSTV.
      • They're barely recognizable, the quality is so bad.
      • BruceWillis joined the channel
      • tingkatu
no, will check it out, badon thanks
      • LjL
badon, i remember showing those to other hams before and they were outraged at the porniness and said the person should be reported to authorities
      • (... but it's a Russian callsign i think?)
      • (i ain't reporting anyone to Putin)
      • badon, i've almost convinced my tinkerer friend to buy an rtl-sdr and in particular this one http://www.rtl-sdr.com/buy-rtl-sdr-dvb-t-dongles/
      • i do think i've used multipsk before
      • but cutesy palmtop decoders are nice
      • PocketDigi is nice
      • badon
LjL: Haha, yeah, people's first reaction is outrage, but none of them in your link are so risque that they would be universally considered illegal. Those kind DO get sent over SSTV though, usually in countries with lax enforcement, haha.
      • tingkatu: Yeah, good to have you in #coins. It will be nice if you'd like to stay and help us grow the channel/forum.
      • LjL
      • it's an open source program, although obviously it runs on a closed source platform
      • tingkatu
Sure, I added it to autojoin, badon! And now I must sleep
      • nice to have met ya
      • badon
tingkatu: OK, talk to you later.
      • LjL: Looking.
      • LjL
badon, after all these years Android has supplanted PocketPC devices and other palmtops, there still isn't something like PocketDigi (at least not open source) for it
