Anyone have a lot of experience troubleshooting docker and port forwarding? I'm having an issue where I can telnet to the containers port from the host but can't telnet to the host IP and the port specified. The port is bound to all IPs

I understand using docker for a web app, but Im not sure why you would use it for a system daemon like a mail server? Any input?

        pcfreak30: What's the difference?
      • Also, why is a mail server a "system daemon", but a web app is... not a system daemon?
      • pcfreak30
cpuguy83: a web app isnt running on its own
      • cpuguy83: Just trying to comprehend when or when not use use docker sine you could apply to to every single process on a machine
      • eccentricson
But if you can reduce your cost for your virtualization software by running multiple applications with one instance or VM, why not?
      • doc|work has quit
      • cpuguy83
pcfreak30: Use it for what makes sense to you. But I run all services in a container.
      • pcfreak30
eccentricson: Reduce costs? You mean not paying for several vpses for different ENV's?

Correct. So I'm thinking in the sense of AWS where you pay for each instance. If you can run 1 t2.micro instance and have 3-4 services on it than running 3-4 t2.micro's and paying for them

docker build --dns does not seem to work. is there any other way to config this in the dockerfile?
      • cpuguy83
alaird: No, this would need to be set on the daemon.
      • pcfreak30
eccentricson: like say i have a virtualmin control panel running. i know i could put all of the services in docker and mount/alias the folders for them, but im not sure of the real benefit there

Cleaner setup maybe? You don't have a mail, a dns, a DHCP server. It's all in one server and you log into that one server to manage them all. In your situation with dedicated's it might not make sense. But it is useful if you're trying to develop an application or something

      • eccentricson
Hmm, running into this error when setting up a container from an image I pushed to the repo. Is it possible it's my ENTRYPOINT in my Dockerfile? APIError: 404 Client Error: Not Found ("Cannot start container 41caa4ebdc3a43f2a1c7f3204ef59e4600e6daf617a7c3b5d9990523a91d56c6: [8] System error: no such file or directory")

      • cpuguy83
alaird: This will never be added. Sorry.
      • eccentricson
pcfreak30: Not quite sure on that one. I don't think I understand the question. But many Linux people like to try something "just to do it" :D
      • cpuguy83
alaird: Can you not set --dns on the daemon? Seems like the appropriate place.
