I think that google groups doesn't require a gmail account.

You can also make a google account without a gmail account.

nope. but something switched my email address in the settings from my personal one to a googlemail.com one...

i think google makes it purposefully hard to keep different accounts / identities separated :-/

but then i think i used the same email address as a recovery / secondary email address in one of my google accounts, maybe that screwed things up

I wish more google services supported the email query parameter GCP supports, that way I could bookmark stuff that worked at home and at work

that said the oracle vbox image is basically rhel

that means the kernel image by default only contains drivers it needs for that hardware (ie vbox) and generally won't boot on another hypervisor
