you're trying to do work with the ORM when this file is imported
that is BAD
for this very reason -- the tables don't exist, and you're trying to use them

what's best practice for using urlize with text that also needs html escaping?
or is that just something that can't be done, per the urlize docs that say not to use it on text that has html?
mattmcc
Yeah, if you're in that situation, you may find a lightweight markup language like markdown useful, instead of HTML.
chasonchaffin
does something go wrong when you use the escape filter followed by the urlize filter?

mattmcc: not sure what you mean there? as in, rewrite the plain text input into markdown, do something urlize-like to find the URLs and wrap them with []s and then render to html or something?
the input to this application is plain text from an external source
"The urlize filter also takes an optional parameter autoescape. If autoescape is True, the link text and URLs will be escaped using Django’s built-in escape filter. The default value for autoescape is True."
ajd
it only applies escape inside the link text
the input in this case is a larger block of text
urlize's autoescape won't stop me putting <script>alert('hello world');</script> outside of the url/link text

how about wrapping the whole thing in {% autoescape on %}?
hmm, i'll have to think about it a bit more and maybe rework that other tag too
anyway, thanks for the advice
ajd has to return to working on his actual job

chasonchaffin: what do you think about mailchimp?
chasonchaffin
I haven't used them personally but I've heard good things
I don't know what mailchimp's volume of emails is though but sendgrid is HUGE. I believe their scale is above and beyond anyone else in their market and yet their reputation is very good so thats why I chose them in the past
