Heroku costs quite a bit more because you don't have to do any server administration.

AWS is a lot of things. But EC2, the 'servers', is just computation resources that run whatever OS image you choose.

You don't have servers to run on Heroku, you have apps and addons.

they've totally munted their PIL install... it can't handle JPEG or PNG
