nagerst: i don't remember what the first two options are, but i assume you also tried the non-graphical mode?
      • nagerst: when you say it "just beeps" you mean actually the screen goes black, no text is output (or very little), THEN it beeps?
      • nagerst: (being specific about this detail is important for diagnosis)
      • freemangordon joined the channel
      • nagerst: if it just beeps when you hit enter, but stays on that boot screen and stays in the menu... that's a fundamentally different problem
      • chomwitt has quit
      • nagerst: taking off for a while now, but if the issue is the former (screen goes black but you get no error text) try looking for an option to change the kernel command-line, and remove "quiet" from it
      • nagerst: chances are then it should output an actually useful error (maybe even one i've seen before)
      • nagerst: if you can't even get that far, probably a bios problem, but usually such bios problems prevent the usb key from even booting as far as the main menu
      • nagerst: but if there's a "safe mode" option and that works, it's probably some apm/acpi/apic mess in the bios. (you can disable those too, with different command-line options)

      • i really feel bad for people trying to find linux support in #nvidia
      • at best they're ignored
      • occasionally they're met with open contempt
      • (the channel /topic seems to trick a lot of people into thinking anyone in there cares about supporting nvidia drivers on linux)

it was an uefi error. The program i had used to create the bootable USB included the UEFI stuff so the stick could not boot. After removing it, it worked just fine.

        oh, bummer
      • well lucky you, it was not a worse problem

Even that version is too old to solve the current upgrade deadlock :/

Devuan is actually on beta2. A stable version is planned?
      • fsmithred
        yes, RC is soon
      • greinbold
        nice!
      • fsmithred

we'd be fools to abandon this :^) consider we use it as base OS in a very well paid research project at dyne...
      • whose ultimate goal is not devuan, yet we adopt devuan as base and contribute back upstream if needed
      • greinbold
what is the dyne project? I search too a new main base system without systemd and Devuan is in concurrency with *BSD and Gentoo on my short list :P
      • Lydia_K
There has been some talk of Scientific Linux maybe moving to devuan as a base, which I'm personally going to try and push forwards.
      • greinbold: Devuan is not going away
      • there are already other distros using it as a base, it will go on no matter what happens to the current developers.

As Scientific Linux is based of RedHat its move to Devuan would sure be an about face. What is motivating that discussion?
      • golinux
        I would guess systemd
      • Lydia_K
systemd is what I heard, so far I've heard it second hand, so I wouldn't take it as gospel just yet.
      • ahura
Yes, systemd: hard to tweek in a lab enviornment, easy to break, and difficult to troubleshoot no doubt ...
      • Lydia_K
        incredibly
      • and could likely break mountains of code places have developed over decades
      • At any rate, as someone who administers a large cluster and supports research scientists I already find myself building all the unusual things they need all the time, and I am dreading moving to CentOS 7
      • so if I can package up enough of the software they need, make it all available in devuan, maybe scientific linux will move to devuan and I can move from CentOS 6.8 to Scientific Linux
      • golinux
That would be quite a contribution Lydia_K
      • Lydia_K
I'm going through that "how to package" walkthrough right now :)
      • I *REALLY* don't want to move my beautiful cluster to shitty systemd
      • golinux
systemd has been quite a motivator!
      • Lydia_K
        LOL
      • yes it has..
      • golinux
And you expertise is a perfect fit for this transition
      • +r
      • Lydia_K
I'm gonna do everything I can to push them to devuan.
      • I hope they have an IRC channel, I'll have to become a regular there.
