are you guys working on supporting Puppet or other systems than chef yet?
aspiers
not yet, unless you count introducing the jig abstraction layer which enables supporting multiple backends

:(
Chef is really a huge detractor for me
aspiers
why?
Phibs
because I've never used it, and never plan on it :)
I don't know what the usage looks like in the industry, but you at least have two major camps (puppet vs chef)
so either way unless you support both you're going to piss off 50% :)
aspiers
that's why the jig was introduced
Phibs
nod
aspiers
but you don't need to know Chef to use Crowbar
it's just a backend
Phibs
Indeed but i'd like to make changes to things and understand/modify in the future
ie, don't need/want a black box
aspiers
Well don't complain about having to learn it then :)
It's not a black box at all, but learning Chef is only required if you really want to do a lot of tweaking
Phibs
nod
aspiers
all the standard options are exposed through the Crowbar UI
Phibs
well not a black box, but certainly a big crufy one that I've seen so far
*crufty
aspiers
Chef is actually pretty nice
Phibs
Chef yeah
if I had not learned Puppet first i'd give it a shake, other than disliking the pure ruby part :)
aspiers
I don't think they're really that different
Phibs
I think Chef appeals to developers more than system engineer types
aspiers
That's what I heard too
Phibs
they aren't functionality wise
but yeah i'm hoping there is a drive to support Puppet (and salt/ansible too)
aspiers
pull requests are always welcome :)
Phibs
<-- syseng not developer :)
aspiers
IMHO you'll become a better syseng if you think of yourself as a dev
the best syseng work always involves automation and coding
I think the growth of DevOps is testament to this
that said, I appreciate you may not have time to implement a Puppet backend in Crowbar ;-)
Phibs
Yes, I 100% agree and I do these things already :) And that is the issue :)
I love devops, my issue is dev... a lot of times doesn't think about ops, and is bad at it :)
(not related to crowbar necessarily)

Phibs, The new Crowbar 2.0 has a script jig and a chef jig at this time. Many of us would like to see a Puppet jig added also.
It's not rocket science to do it - just a matter of available resources and priorities for now.
