Damn... I wouldn't say that's absolutely conclusive but it's pretty concrete.
Any evidence that AMD has backdoors?
badon
Yep, pretty concrete is conservative.
Charles__: Yes, AMD said it would investigate or something lame like that.
They sounded nervous, haha.
AMD's backdoors haven't been independently published yet, but they're there.
Charles__
There are a few weak open core CPUs, I guess I'll use them if I need to do any serious encryption. I suppose I'd have to write my own RSA software too which fortunately isn't too hard
There's even an open source laptop
Like every bit of the hardware and software is open source
badon
From a business point of view, AMD should have gone out of business a long time ago, but the fact they're still thoroughly in the game is incredibly suspicious. If it's not NSA money, then they're dealing drugs, haha :)
Charles__
Well they do have their graphics card division.
It's been quite successful recently
badon
The best alternative to AMD and Intel is probably ARM. Since they don't manufacture, only license designs, anyone who has access to the designs can more easily find any backdoors.
Charles__
But companies like Qualcomm could easily add backdoors
badon
Yes, AMD's graphics cards are still inferior to Intel's. AMD is competing on price, and the only way they're even able to do that much is because their "profit" comes from the NSA, so it's OK for them to lose money as long as they look legitimate upon cursory examination.
Yes, they could. Maybe they have.
Charles__
Do you mean inferior to NVIDIA?
badon
Yes
At least, last I checked they were.
That has been about 2 years since I've looked.
Charles__
Not true, I build computers for a living, and while Nvidia usually wins on top end cards, it doesn't matter because most people buy mid end cards where AMD offers better value.
That's probably been the case for a little under two years.
badon
Yeah, if it's less than 2 years, I'm not aware of it.
Charles__
I'm not saying the NSA isn't promping them up, just saying they might not have had to.
badon
I'll take your word for it.
Charles__
I found a blank penny in circulation too, I wonder if it's worth anything.
badon
Well, AMD still has to look legitimate, or the NSA will give their funding to another competitor to take their place.
Charles__: Yes, iti is.
Charles__
That's true.
badon
It's unstruck, and it's a valuable error.
Charles__
Unstruck, no rim.
So it didn't even get rimmed
badon
Yep. Just a planchet.
Charles__
Google says about $50 with no rim
Only like $5 with a rim
badon
Rims are created during the striking process, but the planchets get rolled before that to raise the planchet "rim" up a little, and remove some of the roughness from punching. That reduces the required striking pressure for a full strike, and increases the life of the dies.
Charles__
Speaking of the rim I found a penny with a super steep rim on both sides
I'm skeptical that it actually came out of the mint like that since I can't find mention of anything like it anywhere
badon
I've seen those too. Sometimes they're valuable, but usually not.
Charles__
It's dime sized because the rim is so deep
badon
Oh, that has been hammered.
Charles__
Like manually by some random guy?
badon
Basically somebody just rotated on an anvil while gently tapping it with a hammer.
Yes, it raises the rim impressively pretty quickly.
Charles__
I suspected something like that, oh well it's still cool
Why do people do that?
badon
Bored.
I've done it :)
I saw one of those pennies, and I had to try it myself, and it worked just like they said it would.
Charles__
If you did it to a 1987 d lincoln penny screw you
badon
haha, maybe that one's mine :)
Charles__
Do you know anything about so called grease errors?
badon
What's that?
You mean a filled-die?
goldfinger joined the channel
The alleged culprit is always grease, but it could be anything.
It's probably more likely to be something like flecks of copper plating stuck to the die. Copper is actually kind of sticky, and will easily adhere to the dies if it comes loose.
Charles__
I think filled die
The front of the penny looks like a blob
The date is completely missing, most of the words are unreadable
The back is normal
badon
That could be filled-die, or it could be weak strike.
Charles__
It's also slightly misshapen
badon
If the back is normal, then it's a filled die, not a weak strike.
Charles__
Well the back is a teeny bit smudgy looking around the edges
Are filled dies worth anything?
badon
It could be broadstruck or a brockage.
Yes, if they're impressive, they're worth more.
Not a lot more, but it depends on how interesting and rare it is.
Charles__
Mine looks like an autistic retard version of a lincoln penny so I'm hopeful
badon
It's always worth "more" to the "right" buyer.
Charles__
How do you know so much about error coins?
badon
I know a lot about a lot of things.
Coins are kind of just a side thing.
I'm probably one of the world's top experts, or becoming so - it depends on how you want to define it.
Charles__
Well thanks for all the info. For some reason information on error coins is a PITA to find.
But I was referring to Socrates' Apology, "the more you know the more you know that you don't know"
badon
Yeah, that's true.
One of my favorites is: A wise man can learn from a fool, but a fool can't learn from a wise man.
One I came up with myself is: Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he sinks the boat.
I'm going to put that on my forum profile.
I just added that feature.
Charles__
The one you came up with?
badon
Yes.
Charles__
You moderate /r/coins?
badon
No, why did you ask that?
Charles__
I thought you meant reddit flair or something when you said forum profile.
Which forum?
Holy shit this isn't the reddit coin IRC.
badon
It isn't?
I thought it was.
Charles__
Now I have no idea, I just found it on some random website. But it says forum.coincompendium.com on the IRC topic.
Can't remember why I thought it was reddit.
badon
Hmm, we have some traction on Reddit.
You might have found us via there somehow.
We're the only coin chat group though.
And by far the largest.
Charles__
It's a mystery then, I suppose.
Do you collect coins for fun?
badon
Yes, I do enjoy it, but I don't enjoy if I'm not making money on it.
That's why I sold all my USA coins.
Charles__
I'm convinced silver is going to at least triple in value within my lifetime
Inflation adjusted of course
badon
I agree.
goldfinger
Charles__, you read socrates' apology?
Charles__
Did you have any USA junk silver?
badon
I made lots of money on silver. I sold it in 2008.
Charles__
I have read it goldfinger, I didn't study it.
badon
Charles__: That used to be my favorite kind to invest in.
Charles__
badon, very recently it was below $18 an ounce, why didn't you pile into it?
goldfinger
whats the difference, do you mean as in a more leisurely approach?
Charles__
goldfinger, I did it as part of a seminar, but we didn't go in depth into it.
So it was formal but not deep.
badon
Charles__: Because I'm making way more money on Chinese coins right now.
Charles__
Taking advantage of them suppressing their currency somehow?
badon
No, taking advantage of the end of communist suppression of precious metals and coin collecting.
goldfinger
Was it interesting Charles__ ?
badon
The last communist retrictions were removed in 2003, so the Chinese coin market is doing 300 years of maturation in a few short decades. I've never made so much money in my life, it's insane.
Charles__
goldfinger, very, before the seminar I never gave philosophy a second thought and now I'm hungry for it
badon, nice, I wish you luck on it.
badon
That's funny, I call the quote fields on the forum "Philosophy of the moment".
I think 3 of them should be enough.
Charles__
3 quotes?
badon
Yes, convenient fields encouraging people to add some sayings to their profile.
