        oh... gross.
      • editing album artist/artist doesn't change artist_credit, artist_sort, albumartist_credit or albumartist_sort
      • darwin
        why would it?
      • jdoe
it doesn't make sense to you to have albumartist, albumartist_credit and albumartist_sort synched?
      • I am unclear why I would want them as (in this case) Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Billy, Bonnie “Prince”, respectively.
      • fixing this is going to be a bit of a pain, I think.
      • darwin
why would I want them "linked" when I can change them all explicitly?
      • they're actually different things?
      • it is weird if those three use different quotes, though?
      • jdoe
in the vast majority of cases they're not, but I take your point.
      • darwin
        and an error?
      • albumartist_sort is *very* frequently not albumartist
      • but sure
      • jdoe
on cases where there's no "The" or non-ascii characters?
      • jdoe shrugs.
      • darwin
John Doe has sortname "Doe, John"
      • but sure.
      • jdoe
ah, true. I was only thinking of band names.
      • either way, I'm trying to undo it ;)
      • darwin
sortname is most commonly relevant with proper names, for sure :D
      • I'm pretty sure there's a way to express "set these 3 fields to the value of this 4th field"
      • with some pretty easy shell stuff?
      • jdoe
yeah, maybe... that's what I'm looking into. Trying to sanitize a handful of characters from my names/titles got me into this mess though, I don't want to make it worse.
      • darwin
hrm, well. always test on a part of your hair where it doesn't show...
      • jdoe
        yep.

can i interrupt and resume a long import without needing to reenter all the previously made decisions and choose between the new and already imported versions?

Usage question: What's the best way to do importing as a cron job? I thought 'beet import -q music_folder' would work, and then at a later time do a manual incremental import to catch up on those albums that need input. It seems that the latter part doesn't work. With the -q option, does beet skip the folder but nevertheless marks it as processed?
      • Deelight
        no
      • it skips everything that needs human decision
      • as if it wasn't there
      • Kvaks
Hm. Ok. I just tested it by adding two new albums, one of which I knew would need manual input. First album was imported fine, second album skipped. Then did another import, expected to be prompted for the second album, not no new albums were found. (Had to disable incremental and import the specific subfolder in order to have it imported.)
      • It looks to me that albums that are skipped (when using -q) is marked as processed and skipped in the future.

i came back to beets after being away and had written a prompt and then a chroma error message. now it appears not to accept keyboard input at all and is stuck
      • do i need to kill the python process, start over and be more attentive?
      • watsonalgas has quit
      • fwiw, i could proceed by stopping the process (control-z) and restarting it (fg shell builtin command). then i could enter a letter and beets continued

sampsyo: beets put individual tracks into top level directories as though the track name was the artist name
      • as a result, the 6-disk collecton is scattered over many direcoties. it's a real mess
      • sampsyo
        What's your path configuration?
      • (Any chance the top-level directory you expected to be there is empty?)
      • i.e., it's $artist and the $artist field is empty for those files

why is beets trying to switch an album art path of None to /path/to/music/None when editing?

sampsyo: i'm not sure i understand your other question. it's a classical music box set with many different performers, one condctor and one composer. i don't know what "artist" means for such a thing
      • i imagine this boxed set could be in one directory (under my beets `directory:`) named as the conductor (boulez) or the compsoer (webern) or it might be an album in Various Artists or in Compilations
      • DexterLB has quit
      • looking at other "classical" music, seems beets usually uses the composer name for $artist

tom[]: I was trying to get at the idea that the "missing" directory level might indicate missing metadata
      • For example, is it the $albumartist part of the path that's not there?
      • Then, use something like `beet ls -af '$albumartist'` to check whether that field is empty
      • tom[]
please pardon my noob questions. to check if a field (e.g. $albumartist) of a given item has a value, don't i need to specify that item somehow in the query? i don't know how to specify the item
      • i figured it out
      • robink_ joined the channel
      • to answer your question: no. the problem appears to be that beets considers the song title to be the album name: like this https://gist.github.com/. not as musicbrainz has it like this: https://musicbrainz.org/release/4d021d8e-52d2-4...
