Is it safe to run multiple instances of beet import ?
      • ThomW
        I don't think so considering it's sqlite
      • darwin
it is safe, but you'll get locking
      • what is your goal in running multiple instances, fingerprinting on multiple cores?
      • Nukien
        against the sqlite db ?
      • Just more throughput - seems to take a minute or two to actually rewrite the tags, filenames and copy the files etc.
      • darwin
(yes, but I think it'll be ok? sampsyo may be able to speak more definitively, the above is just my understanding/experience)
      • Nukien
I'm doing one album at a time since some require a manual lookup on discogs etc to find the right id
      • darwin
(don't use discogs! import from discogs into musicbrainz, it's win/win!)
      • ThomW
"Multiple processes can have the same database open at the same time. Multiple processes can be doing a SELECT at the same time. But only one process can be making changes to the database at any moment in time, however."
      • sampsyo
Nukien: *probably* fine, but did you know beets already uses threads to copy files in the background when you import multiple things in sequence?
      • ThomW
ok I thought shit would break if you opened the same db multiple times, apparently that's not the case
      • Nukien
        Yup I know that
      • Just looking for ways to speed it up a bit

      • Some of the more esoteric stuff isn't in mb, but I do find it (or a close match) in discogs
      • darwin
ThomW: sqlite is simple but effective
      • Nukien
Oh, another question about modify - I'm importing a bunch of albums that I want grouped together - Goa for example
      • The import puts some in "Goa" and some in "Various Artists"
      • darwin
Nukien: right, imo the best thing to do then is to import it via an importer https://github.com/murdos/musicbrainz-userscripts
      • Nukien
        So I do a beet modify -a goa volume 28 albumartist="Goa"
      • darwin
because musicbrainz has better data quality, good community, and is open source/"free"
      • Nukien
That works, but sometimes it moves the album to Goa, sometimes it doesn't
      • sampsyo
Nukien: check the comp flag (and see the docs on the default path formats)
      • Nukien
Cool - nice set of scripts
      • The comp flag ?
      • ah undeer paths:

        Hi
      • chrisb
darwin: can people mirror musicbrainz.org, though?
      • niols
        I have a beets / musicbrainz question
      • I'm trying to use beets on Avishai Cohen's albums
      • And beets would like to use the original name (אבישי כהן)
      • While I would like to use the 'English' name (Avishai Cohen)
      • I know there's an importer option for that (import: languages: ['en'])
      • But it's not making any difference
      • So I guess either I my use of the config file is wrong, or MusicBrainz's database is not complete enough
      • Nukien
Right, but what is triggering it to stay in Various Artists ?

      • That is, the Musicbrainz Album Type tag as displayed by mediainfo
      • Compilation=yes as well
      • Musicbrainz Album Type tag for Hackers is just "soundtrack"
      • chrisb has left the channel
      • Occasionally the lyrics plugin completely borks and inserts random text
      • MaynardWaters has quit
      • darwin
chrisb : "mirror" ? "yes" for most meanings of mirror
      • Nukien
Feeling very noobish here - how are those importer scripts used ? chrome wouldn't install the discogs one from the site, so dropped it manually into settings->extensions, and it's there now, but now what ?
      • darwin
Nukien: are you logged into musicbrainz and discogs?
      • Nukien: I had heard there are issues getting it working in chrome, I have not had the "cannot install from the site" issue myself...
      • Nukien
        yup
      • darwin
but when it works, you'll see a button pop up
      • that says "search in musicbrainz / import into mb"
      • Nukien
Hrm - not for me. How did you install in chrome ?
      • darwin
I recall just clicking on it
      • not sure I needed tampermonkey?
      • Nukien
When I click on Install I get a yellow drop-down at the top "Apps, extensions, and user scripts cannot be added from this website."
      • darwin
        yeah, I have heard that
      • and then a guy worked around by installing directly to extensions
      • but said it didn't work
      • I haven't encountered that, unfortunately
      • if you have firefox... ? :/
      • Nukien
That's what I did - seemed to work, at least it's listed in extensions, but I get no button
      • Heh FF just opens the .js as text
      • What is the *right* way to move albums ? I imported several "Guitar Rock 1972-1973" "Guitar Rock 1974-1975" albums, and they're under Various Artists. I would like to move them to "Guitar Rock"
      • darwin
        what is "guitar rock" ?
      • a "series" ?
      • Nukien: unfortunately I have no solution to this problem at this time, if I find out I will try to let you know
      • :/
      • Nukien
I just want the albums on disk under the dir "Guitar Rock" rather than "Various Artists" - just to group them a bit
      • darwin
... beets is driven by meta-information, generally.
      • "guitar rock" is.. a... genre or something?
      • if your files were tagged with that, you could use that genre tag to organize on disk..
      • Nukien
Heh - nope - just my own
      • "Various Artists" gets so damn big
      • darwin
there are ways to arbitrarily tag things in beets
      • you could use that for purposes like this, in theory.
      • Nukien
I just want the db and disk locations to match up
      • Without having a bajillion albums in "Various Artists"
      • I have a bunch of Hed Kandi albums - they're in Various Artists, though I would prefer to group them into a "Hed Kandi" dir
      • etc
