doriangray: Based on that, I'd say that both $EDITOR is unset, and xdg-open is unconfigured, or configured incorrectly.

Probably the best way to fix that is to set $EDITOR in your bashrc, or just before you run the command.

Exposure: export EDITOR="leafpad"
