Hey I have a question, how do I work with a 15 year old girl who is reluctant to learn coding - due to what appears to be social conditioning not an inherent response - to give it a shot?
      • I've tried to be a positive role model, but she thinks of me as someone "different" than most people and just showing her examples of women who code wouldn't help
      • tarpman1
I mean.. does she use tumblr or something.. show her how cool her tumblr can be with a little bit of javascript?
      • anannie
The thing is that her mother (the major influencer in her life) has made statements to me that as a teacher she observes that only "odd people and aspies" go into computer science, so I think that's a big stigma for her
      • tarpman1: Oh that would be lovely - I don't do that type of coding though (I do low level C and lua - now python for ML)
      • tarpman1
wow.. that's tough. well I mean teach yourself a little bit of js then
      • anannie
Is there somewhere I can read up about this? A canonical soource?
      • * source
      • tarpman1
Also, I have had fun making a few tumblr bots with the api and there is a python wrapper for it
      • anannie
tarpman1: is there something more surface level that she can try? I'm thinking of getting her interested in it through the route I went
      • tarpman1
I guess it's aspie behavior to make a tumblr bot tho
      • anannie
        Yup
      • tarpman1
I feel like web programming is something that is easier to get people excited about
      • anannie
The route I went through was Cynthia Brezeal > Robotics > coding for robotics > and so on
      • tarpman1
        ooo
      • anannie
Web programming is kinda boring even for me, so I'm not sure if I can pass it on
      • tarpman1
        yah I h8 it
      • Wait what about something like getting her into processing or "code as art" ?
      • anannie
        Yeah, I've thought of that
      • tarpman1
I mean what is she interested in… ?
      • anannie
Writing. "Art stuff" I don't think that she knows it yet.
      • She hasn't been encouraged to push herself intellectually
      • tarpman1
Do you think she'd be interested in the idea of generative poetry? .. :-(
      • anannie
*That* I can do, but a markov chain might be too out of her depth
      • tarpman1
I am still kinda like upset her mother/a teacher said that
      • anannie
        So was I
      • They think of me as odd and aspie
      • tarpman1
How/why are you involved? Just curious… I'm glad you are…
      • anannie
They're my neighbours and I've come to care for the girl.
      • She's smart and she deserves a good future
      • the mom is just extremely anti-competitive
      • she actually told her that she would be unhappy in a top school and therefore she shouldn't even strive for it
      • tarpman1
        Wow.
      • Does she have a blog or a tumblr?
      • anannie
        she does
      • she's like the opposite of pushy, helicopter parents
      • tarpman1
Hmmmmm get her into making it cool!
      • anannie
        and just as damaging
      • I've thought of that and she isn't that invested in it. I think that something novel as literally showing up to her door with a robotics set might be the way forward over here
      • Lego Mindstorms really helped me
      • tarpman1
        What about like something wearable?
      • I wanna like make earrings that slightly warm up when you get a text, email, tweet whatever,… you know.. the phrase abt yr ears getting hot when ppl talk about you
      • anannie
tarpman1: That would be really cool. I think that we could do that! I'm not sure how I'll source the parts in India though
      • and there's a certain amount of investment and a testbed required
      • tarpman1
Oh wow you are in India!
      • anannie
        Yes, currently.
      • tarpman1
Wow.. i mean if you want me to send you something I'd surely do it
      • anannie
She's an american and I'm a french-mauritian though, so we're both expats but we live in India
      • tarpman1
my email is [email protected] … despite my nick, I am a lady who uses python
      • anannie
        I could tell
      • tarpman1
        :-)
      • anannie
I really like the idea of kicking it off with mindstorms. There's less hassle involved over there and if she rejects it I can use it!
      • I want to do electronics stuff in India, but sourcing the parts requires you to go into questionable places that isn't very accessible to me
      • * aren't very accessible to me
      • tarpman1
lmk if you want me to send you something.. idk what it is like to send shit to india, but obviously you may
      • anannie
tarpman1: You can't send accelerometers and GPS units, but other than that it should be fine
      • I guess I could always shop at lady ada
      • it'll just take a month to arrive :p
      • tarpman1
I am gonna go to bed, feel free to email me or PM me ! but I am traveling for work tomorrow. good luck!!
      • anannie
        Thanks!
