rmb938: It depends on the platform, sadly. If your DHCP server can assign hostnames that can work.
      • rmb938: I guess what do you plan to use the hostname for.]
      • rmb938
yup. i actually just figured out how to get a dhcp server do ddns. now i jsut need to figure out how to get it to generate a hostname to use

looking at the screenshots for coreupdate i see a bunch of references to ec2. do i get something more by running coreos+coreupdate on ec2 then say on baremetal?
      • robszumski
darren0: what screenshot are you referring to?
      • darren0
      • i see autoscaling groups, instance ids
      • robszumski
darren0: the instance ID is the unique ID for the machine, independent of any EC2 API
      • it treats all machines equally, but does some OEM tracking
      • purely for reporting
      • darren0
ah, ok. what about the auto scaling group? is that just a label on that screen
      • GoodThing
[email protected] instanceids are not guaranteed unique across regions FYI
      • EC2
      • darren0
specifically this one https://coreos.com/assets/images/screenshots/Gr... says "EC2 Autoscale"

That long number looks like an EC2 autoscaling launch configuration id

is there any way to specify fleet metadata dynamically? I’d like to update fleet’s public ip after boot, when I’ve associated an Elastic IP to the EC2 node
      • philips
        GoodThing: they are just uuids
      • GoodThing: nothing fancy

      • GoodThing
        agreed

      • robszumski
darren0: yeah, that was showing that you could group a bunch of coreos machines being autoscaled as a group
      • nothing about CoreUpdate is connected to any AWS api
      • darren0
but do you see the auto scaling group from the meta data and automatically group them?
      • oh
      • robszumski
no, the grouping is done by reporting the group id
      • this is so you could group machines across regions, scaling groups, whatever
      • NOTICE: [coreos-cloudinit] crawford comment on issue #167: hang on http://git.io/pjphlw
      • darren0: does that make sense?
      • darren0
        yeah
      • cloud-config is getting out of hand. you now need a system to manage the cloud config....
      • robszumski
ideally its just the minimum number of parameters to get the machine into the cluster
      • darren0
seriously though, cloud-config defines the config of the node, its applied when the system starts, how do I know that all nodes in my cluster are built off of the same cloud-config.
      • NOTICE: [coreos-cloudinit] crawford comment on issue #167: ok, my tests pass https://github.com/coreos/coreos-cloudinit/pull/167#issuecomment-47604909
      • NOTICE: [coreos-overlay] marineam comment on issue #712: We haven't bumped go yet. When we do *everything* gets built with the new go. iirc the previous docker release mentioned it had issues with 1.3 but I don't know what they were. http://git.io/gJ1BIg
      • honestly I'd like to put cloud config in etcd. then all I ever need to do is put the discovery url in cloud config
      • and then magically they are all the same
      • robszumski
darren0: the issue with that is security…if your cloud-config contains sensitive info
      • if you wanna write up a proposal or something that would be great, get the conversation started
      • darren0
true, but i honestly haven't wrapped my ahead yet around etcd/fleet security. all containers can talk to etcd, so then it seems like i need to use ssl client cert to control access, but then its an all or nothing deal. etcd doesn't have directory/node acls, right?
      • robszumski: maybe i will. i keep seeing things on the mailing list where people use cloud config with write_files and stuff and suddenly cloud-config seems like its becoming a lightweight puppet/chef. but then I started to feel like we lost some of the statelessness that coreos was supposed to provide. so somehow the ability to change all this stuff now has allowed me to make snowflake servers
      • robszumski
        darren0: no ACLs yet
      • darren0: its really how the user wants to use it, if you want to get crazy you can, but ideally all services are started with fleet and you use that for most things
      • darren0
agreed, but coreos should put forward so opinioned view of how it should be done, or at least tools to point out that your shooting yourself in the foot. for example, maybe just hash the cloud-config and store it in etcd. then I atleast know they used the same config, without knowing the value
