ehazlett: have you ever encountered with this problem: https://forums.aws.amazon.com/message.jspa?mess...
      • ehazlett
        maggie_s_: fortunately, no
      • you having issues?
      • maggie_s_
ehazlett: yes, download is at under 50 kB/s
      • ehazlett: and GBs to go
      • ehazlett
        ouch
      • maggie_s_
ehazlett: the previous folder downloaded with flying colors , but the second one is stalling
      • ehazlett: does our ftp work for you? seems unresponsive to me
      • ehazlett
        hmm
      • let me check
      • maggie_s_: yeah seems to be working for me
      • maggie_s_
ehazlett: do you think it might help restarting the Internet router?
      • ehazlett
        yeah could be your connection
      • maggie_s_
ehazlett: will try now... will be out for a bit

      • ehazlett
that looks like it's trying to access it over http
      • maggie_s_
ehazlett: that's what I am trying to open
      • ehazlett: with ftp: prefix
      • ehazlett
      • the login prompt
      • maggie_s_
ehazlett: I got it once, too - but after entering the credentials, nothing happens

      • ehazlett
hmm can you DM me the credentials?
      • maggie_s_
        ehazlett: sure
      • ehazlett
        "use /msg ehazlett"

ehazlett: That screenshot is from a project I created for testing on my local dev instance.  We actually probably could use that API key if we really wanted to for staging, but I think there should be some way to get the same thing for unisubs.
      • is there a way for me to log on to that the universal subtitles project?
      • If I could navigate the menus, I think I could figure it out
      • ehazlett
        bendk: DM'g creds

      • janeted
ehazlett, are the youtube creds still broken on staging?
      • ehazlett
janeted: yeah ben and i have been looking at it
      • janeted
ok - he just fixed the subs saving when there is an api error
      • could we just merge that and deploy to staging -it would be easiest for me to test while staging is broken like that
      • ehazlett, can you just double check this an merge / deploy staging? Or would that interfere with what you are currently doing
      • ehazlett
        that shouldn't mess with anything
      • i will merge/deploy
      • janeted
        thx
      • ehazlett

ehazlett, would it be possible to dump out the Activity table from the DB ?
      • ehazlett
        which?
      • staging/prod
      • janeted
I know it's huge, but franontanaya needs to do a ton of queries to collect some stats for udacity - and it maybe be better faster if he just had the data
      • Prod / Activity tabl
      • ehazlett
        and just an export?
      • janeted
yeah - I imagine he could just load it into a local db and then query directly
      • ehazlett
ok -- i will need a little more info on the Activity -- because the table names are different
      • i.e. video activity?
      • janeted
oh - 1 sec, let me check
      • oh - he probably needs to do the api queriies
      • ehazlett, actually it could work
      • I think he'd need videos_action and teams_teammember;
      • and from there he could just select the counts of each action
      • or ....
      • ehazlett, let me cc you on franontanaya email.
      • ehazlett
        ok
      • janeted
Seems like the data he needs could be gotten with a few simple queries vs trying to grab all the teams records via the API and then parse all the data to just get some numbers
      • ehazlett
        ok
      • janeted
ok ehazlett - i sent you that email - sounds like franontanaya was planning to work on this over the weekend if it's easy for you to give him a data dump - it would probably be helpful.
      • DarrenBridenbeck joined the channel
      • franontanaya
        that'd be great, yeah
      • ehazlett
        ok
      • janeted: staging deployed
      • franontanaya
another thing -- I'm having some headache finding a practical way of retrieving the project name a certain video belongs to for a team like Udacity -- I wouldn't even try to fetch the video resources and search that particular video there with 14K+ videos in the team
      • I got the project name from the youtube video itself, but I can't remember seeing it anywhere in the UI for a specific video
      • -- not something critically important, but I bump against that fairly often
      • janeted
      • put in the video's url and will get back the project
      • franontanaya
        thanks, I missed that one

ehazlett: so I want to simulate doing a deployment on my local dev instance. How possible is that? What would I need to do starting with a bash prompt in the docker instance?
      • janeted: sylvainc: I have a really small change I'd like to make before we deploy staging. It's not that important, but it's also very safe
      • sylvainc
sure bendk, shall I merge it?
      • bendk
        if it loosk good
      • sylvainc
        I think it does!
      • janeted
bendk, is the youtube account linking fixed now?
      • bendk
        maybe
      • janeted
so we need to deploy staging?
      • bendk
I think ehazlett created a key for us to use
      • the next step would be changing the settings for the deploy
      • janeted
        ah
      • bendk
        the last step is redeploying
      • sylvainc: ehazlett: janeted: just pushed a new branch called dev-commands, it's my attempt at making dev work easier
      • if you have some free time can you try it out and tell me what you think, if I should change anything, if you want it merged to staging
      • the basic idea is to put a bunch of simple scripts in the unisubs/dev directory and add that to your path
      • then you can use commands like manage or test and they should do the right thing
      • no more having to cd to the git root directory either
      • sylvainc
ok bendk, are these scripts mainly thing that use to be done with manage.py
      • bendk
btw, "test" isn't going to work for a command name. I just renamed it to "manage-test"
      • mostly management commands
      • plus there's the docker command to rebuild your image
      • also a command to put you into a bash prompt inside the container
      • mostly simple stuff
      • janeted
will try it for sure, bendk
      • bendk
it's not that special, but it feels way nicer to me to save the typing
      • janeted
sure - plus I'm always looking for the last time I ran a command so I don't have to remember / type it
      • bendk
yeah, I was using way too many ctrl-Rs
      • janeted
bendk, I'd need a separate command for running the selenium tests since they need the xvfb run
      • fig run --rm app xvfb-run --server-args="-screen 0 2048x1600x24" python manage.py test --settings=dev_settings_test $1
      • bendk
        you want to add that?
      • it should be just adding a script to that directory
      • and chmod +x
      • janeted
        sure no problem
      • ehazlett
bendk: sorry just saw this -- i switched to FF and didn't enable notifications for irccloud :(
      • bendk
        ahh, no prob
      • ehazlett
bendk: no there is not an easy way to run things from local due to security group constraints
      • bendk
        ahh ok
      • I guess I can just push the branch and use the jenkins job then
      • that seems fine to me
      • ehazlett
and just fyi - the youtube settings (and almost every credential) are in the settings files
      • the only thing that is passed upon startup are the hosts for solr, rabbit, and aws keys
      • bendk
so now that we are talking about settings, maybe I can run something by you
      • ehazlett
        shoot
      • bendk
I've been hoping to rework how the settings modules are layed out
      • basically, I'd like to make a package instead of a bunch of modules
      • so you would do things like DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE=settings.dev
      • or settings.production
      • or settings.test
      • ehazlett
        ok
      • bendk
seems nicer than lots of modules, does that seem okay to you?
      • ehazlett
i would also like to consolidate what we have too
      • :)
      • yeah i like that idea
      • makes sense
      • bendk
yeah, so this can just be a starting point
